OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Attorney General Rob McKenna is preparing to officially launch a campaign for governor.
A Republican familiar with the McKenna's plans said Tuesday that he will formally begin his 2012 campaign during an event Wednesday night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt McKenna's announcement.
Washington state hasn't had a Republican governor since John Spellman left office in 1985. McKenna was first elected attorney general in 2004 after serving several years on the King County council. He is president-elect of the National Association of Attorneys General.
Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire said Monday she hasn't made a decision about whether to seek a third term. Democrats widely expect U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee to enter the race if Gregoire decides to leave office.
Washington State may finally get a GOP governor.
This is why McKenny didn’t run against Patty Murray last year.
However, check this out from Wikipedia:
On Monday March 22, 2010 McKenna announced that he was joining a multi-state challenge to the constitutionality of a health care overhaul bill passed by US Congress and signed by President Obama. [14]
McKenna decided against defending the Washington State Department of Public Lands in a Superior Court appeal, effectively allowing the Okanogan County PUD to condemn an easement across state trust land. On June 21, 2010 Public Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark filed a petition with the State Supreme Court asking the Attorney General to represent the agency and the State.[15]
That's as good as you'll find in the Evergreen State.
Thanks AuH2ORepublican.
Queen Chrissy was AG for a time, and if that career path worked for her, why not McKenna??
The State has enormous problems, and I will be very interested to hear what he plans to do about them.
This could be good for my state.
AG = Almost Governor
McKenna isn't the most exciting politician (in recent years, he has bravely taken a stand against ID theft, prescription drug abuse, and meth addiction); but he's not a Democrat and he joined the lawsuit against Obamacare. That's good enough for me in this left-wing hellhole called Washington State.
Yabba dabba doo, it’s not Dino. Maybe this time the GOP
can beat the King County rat-ballot finding machine.
Dino’s sitting this one out?
Meh.
Queen Chrissy had political bosses in King Co. mysteriously "find" whatever number of ballots she needed to outvote the rest of the state. McKenna doesn't have that luxury but his RAT opponent certainly will. Until we can pass reforms like mandatory photo ID I don't see the situation changing. RATs know how to manufacture whatever number of votes they need. King Co. gets whoever they want as Governor, regardless of how the other counties vote.
We have the same problem here in Illinois. Occasionally the GOP may pull an upset in political races outside of Crook County, but the Chicago goons and their combine buddies can run whoever they went (no matter how corrupt and awful), and that candidate will get 135% of the votes in Crook County. If this last election cycle, you could make a case that Dan Rutherford is a decent conservative and was elected State Treasurer (and I believe he's a non-combiner, despite what a handful of freepers claim he is obviously being a thorn in the side of Quinn & Madigan), but 2010 was a big GOP year and the combine focused all their efforts on manufacturing phony Quinn votes, accidentally letting Rutherford slip in under the radar against his invisible RAT opponent. They won't make that mistake if he runs for Governor (and he is almost certain to be the GOP nominee in 2014 now that he is lone statewide official). Witness what Blago and the Chicago machine did to Flannigan in '96 after he pulled up an upset victory against Rostencowski in '94.
The zillions of zombie votes will remain regardless of who the GOP runs.
“Meh.”
I remember you used to say how you thought he was a douche RINO.
I’m willing to give him a chance. He’s probably the only Republican with a shot.
I do think he can win. He and SOS Sam Read are the only recent Republicans to be able to win by enough that they couldn’t steal it.
It would be helpful if WA didn’t have their state election during POTUS years, that helps drive the King County vote.
Washington Governor races always remind me of the movie “Tommy Boy”. I like to think the fictional governor from that film was prescient of Gregoire.
I meant “Black Sheep” of course. The superior Farley-Spade film.
