Bachmann consultant Ed Rollins: Palin hasn’t been serious for years
Hot Air ^ | June 7, 2011 | Allahpundit

Posted on 06/07/2011 1:53:00 PM PDT by Graneros

Via the Daily Caller and Politico, if jabs like this are already being thrown before Palin’s even in the race, how brutal will things be in six months when the two of them and Herman Cain are battling for the grassroots vote in Iowa? Good lord.

It’s going to be a long, hot, nasty summer, my friends.

“Sarah has not been serious over the last couple of years,” Rollins told Brian Kilmeade on his radio show, Kilmeade and friends. “She got the Vice Presidential thing handed to her, she didn’t go to work in the sense of trying to gain more substance, she gave up her governorship.”…

“Michele Bachmann and others [have] worked hard, she has been a leader of the Tea Party which is a very important element here, she has been an attorney, she has done important things with family values.”

“She is probably the best communicator [in the GOP field] now that Mike Huckabee’s not in there,” he said.

That’s from Ben Smith, who describes Rollins as Bachmann’s new “top consultant” even though it sounds from yesterday’s CBS scoop like he’ll actually be managing her campaign. This isn’t the first time Rollins has derided Palin, either; remember this op-ed for CNN in December where he described her as a “gadfly” and told her, “If you want to be a serious presidential candidate, get to work”? At the time, it looked like he was tearing her down in advance of another Huckabee run. Now that Huck’s out, he’s landed with her other chief competitor. I was skeptical of that Politico piece a few weeks ago alleging a quiet feud between the two sides, but Rollins’s comments fit the description of Team Bachmann’s outlook perfectly: “[E]ach camp views the other with a level of suspicion, with some of Palin’s supporters seeing Bachmann as a B-list version of their icon, and some in Bachmann’s camp regarding Palin as a short-timer without Bachmann’s record or tenure.” Which raises the question, did Bachmann hire Rollins in spite of his criticisms of Palin — or because of them?

Ed Rollins had nothing to do with Reagan’s ‘76 and ‘80 campaigns. Rollins was brought in by Lyn Nofziger for the ‘84 campaign. Reagan was never behind in ‘84.

Rollins started his politcals campaigns with CA democrats. Rollins is an a##hole. He worked for Perot in ‘92.

“That’s not an indication of good decision-making skills.”

No, it is not.

I attended that rally. The description is accurate. Deafening for Sarah. I also went to Michele’s picnic in Lake Elmo. No more money for you, Michele.

You’re being a little generous. Michele can run on her own program and record without trashing Sarah or having a surrogate do it.

And, as you mention, neither is an official candidate. I cannot imagine Sarah doing this to Michele. If she ever does, you can ping me about it.

Amazing the nasty insults coming from these people. Palin has exposed a lot of people.

Ed Rollins must wish he had kept his big mouth shut. For years the Republican campaign consultant has been known as a compulsive truth teller with a penchant for speaking his mind even when it reflected badly on the candidate he was managing.

Today? No this is from Rollin's campaign of 1993 for Christine Todd Whitman. Paid to Stay At Home? By Jack E. White Monday, Nov. 22, 1993

Bachmann needs to rethink her bringing this dreck into manage her campaign. But, hey it's the results that count right?

Michelle baby better wise up. Ed Rollins is even a worse choice than would be Dick Morris.

I cannot imagine Sarah doing this to Michele.

I guess Palin's not smacked down Newt or Romney in the last week, right? She's above it all? Please. You're naive.

Palin's early exit from the governor's office will be the among top problems she among all voters for she insists on running in 2012. You can't fault anyone for pointing it out, particularly not someone who is working for another candidate. It's absolutely fair game. It's Palin's record.

I've noticed the long knives out for Bachmann for months now. How dare she run, we can't have two women running! How dare Michele run, the nomination belongs to Sarah! She's only running to help Romney against Sarah. Pile it higher and deeper.

The faux outrage on this thread is laughable. Not a single one of you would support Bachmann anyway.

Let's unmangle that line:

Palin's early exit from the governor's office will be among the top problems she has with all voters if she insists on running in 2012.

I’ve for the most part stayed out of the fray, as far as non-establishment candidates or potential candidates. I’ve unloaded with both barrels upon those not even remotely tea party, though.

I’ll say this about Michelle Bachmann and leave it be: she’s said some very awkward things in the past year, and not just a seeming slip or garbled syntax as has been the case with Palin. Bachmann can easily be painted a nutter from her own statements, no creative leaps required.

Will she be? You know it, if she’s the nominee. Could she survive it? No indication one way or the other, she’s in her first term in the US House.

Carry on, flame away. She’s perfectly entitled to make a run at the Presidency if she wants, for any reason or no reason at all. She’s no Sarah Palin, though. Not vetted nor tried by fire. Time will tell if she’s anywhere near as tough and resilient.

I agree with you. Rollins was hired to specifically be a guy to gain some attention for Bachmann and toss out some heavy critiques.

Nothing wrong with what he’s doing. He’s not out trying to get “Sarah” voters to come over to Michelle’s side. He’s trolling for a reasonably large segment of GOP voters who don’t know who they want, but they know they don’t want Palin.

I thought when I saw this in the news today, Good. Now can the Bachmann supporters please get off this nice conservative lady tax attorney and congresscritter with NO experience or qualifications for the presidency, who can’t even play to a TV news camera correctly, and stop trying to make her a poor substitute for Sarah Palin???? If she doesn’t fire this guy in the next 24 hours, you know very well what’s going on and so do I. Impatience (waiting for Palin to announce) shouldn’t lead to stupidity. Pardon my .... whatever ... What do you want, a female Obama just missing the Marxism? Bachmann has no following outside FR. We should know better!!

MB is Myth’s stalking horse to drain off Sarah’s supporters and MB will receive an appointment in Myth’s cabinet.

I hadn't thought of that. Now that I do, I think you're absolutely right.

1. MB is NOT trying to win. 2. MB is Myth’s stalking horse to drain off Sarah’s supporters and MB will receive an appointment in Myth’s cabinet. 3. MB canNOT be trusted.

I don't think MB wants Mitt to win.

But Ed Rollins?

That's a different story.

With the Huckster in 2008 and now this in 2012, Ed Rollins seems to have a new specialty...and it isn't winning.

Your reply to me makes no sense. My post 13 specifically said Reagan ‘84. The three guys in the picture were instrumental in the massive landslide. Atwater et al had a great machine running in that campaign. I never said anything about ‘76 and ‘80. On the other hand, Rollins was a Nixon guy in the 70’s and played around in Cali GOP politics. He was only a Rat in college in the 60’s. After that he was a GOP activist.

As for Perot ‘92, there were quite a few of Republicans like me who were totally fed up with the Kinder Gentler, Thousand Points of Light, Tax Increasing Bush. I don’t blame anyone for backing Perot the first time. I happened to be in the Pitchfork Brigade back in those days (Buchanan). Not a big Bush 1 backer.

You may not like his style of politics but I sure do. Would you like more Mark McKinney types running campaigns watering everything down and forcing candidates to not hit back and to moderate i.e.; McLame?

Michelle had best put a muzzle on Ed Rollins. Bashing Sarah Palin is not going to win her any friends. If this is Rollin’s idea of running a good campaign maybe Michelle should be putting out the help wanted shingle.”

EXACTLY!!!

Is there a contest among Republicans this year for who can go down in flames in the shortest amount of time?

Newt stepped on himself in a matter of days....

Trump was in—then out—& I think he may come back in.

Michelle will PERMANENTLY ruin her chances if Rollins keeps this up.

What a sad thing—the person your are PAYING MONEY to is sabotaging your own campaign.

Talk about treasonous acts!!!

Michelle: COWGIRL UP & FIRE this hack.

Talk about treasonous acts!!!

Is there any point in time when you would find it acceptable for one GOP candidate to go after another during a crowded primary race?

I’ll jump in an note my amusement at the outrage of a political consultant doing what they DO. i.e. carve out a niche - mark some differences.

There are a lot more voters to be persuaded than hang out on internet forums.

Do the Sarah supporters expect all the other candidates to spend their time praising HER? It makes no sense.

But, then again......

I’m not naive.

But you are nuts. (hope that doesn’t insult you)

I do not recall Palin going after another republican in a nasty way. That old ‘quit as governor’ horse, dead for years but still being beaten by the pathetic few who have nothing else substantive to say against Palin, is a non story.

I have not noticed long knives out for Bachman. She’s been very popular on this forum and most of us like her a lot, but not this latest thing.

A cat fight between these two women would be the worst possible thing unless you hate both of them, which may be the case.

If she’s smacked down Romney, I don’t recall it, maybe you could provide details. However, Romney does need a good smacking after his idiotic global warming comments today.

For Bachmann to win, she will need to convince some Palin supports to come over to her side. She will also need a good number of people who like both Palin and Bachmann and who are undecided between the two. This is not how you win over those people.

Overwhelmingly, people who support Palin, and the people who like both Palin and Bachmann, at this point in time, DON'T think that "Palin hasn’t been serious for years."
