Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney has a message to Tea Party candidates nationwide: If you lose your Republican primary bids, stay on the sidelines.
The former Massachusetts governor on Monday warned the grassroots movement not to mount third party efforts in general elections, which he said would siphon votes from Republican nominees.
"If there is a conservative candidate that runs in the general election, then obviously, divide and fail is the result," Romney said in an interview with the conservative Web site Newsmax. "Hopefully Tea Party candidates will run in respective primaries and they will either win or lose. And if they win, they will go into the general. If they lose, they won't, and they will get behind the more conservative of the two finalists."
Romney explained that "dividing our conservative effort in the general elections" would "basically hand the country to Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and that would be very sad indeed."

Romney THREW the 2008 Election to Obama.
Team Romney helped obama and the DNC in 2010.
Your support of Romney, your willingness to vote for Romney
HELPS THE DNC and HELPS LIBERALS.
Within a few days of declaring, he's already running Left. Is he really so arrogant to think he has the Republican nomination wrapped up already? Just from a political stand point, I don't get it.
Whatever his reasons (stupidity, arrogance), I'm happy he's doing it. Show the voters who you really are. If this is the front runner, Gov. Palin will run and she will beat him.
It would be the best of both worlds. We would get an actual Conservative nominee and have some (quietly celebrated) vindictive pleasure in knowing the Establishment doesn't have the control of the Party they thought they had.
Yes, this is leadership-with-vision talking.
Opposing MormonISM the way I do, I realize we need to defend, defend, defend. Yet, if ALL we do is defend vs. 52,000 Lds missionaries & the millions that Romney's wallet pours into its slander vs. the Christian church...and if we don't simultaneously go on the offense with proclaiming the Gospel, we lose over the long run.
Likewise, FREEPERS cannot afford to be so short-sighted that their vote is to only be anti-Obama.
If we lose our true identity as pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-liberty, the RINOs will have turned the GOP into a cross-dressing Big Tent unisex bathroom where anybody masquerading as 'Republican' can expect 'support.'
Sorry, that's not just shooting ourselves in the foot; but the heart!
Romney never met a leftist cause he didn’t like:
Abortion “rights”
Gay “rights”
Gun control
Socialized health care
And now:
GLOBAL WARMING!
He’s a freaking leftist all the way!
In fairness to Romney, he is whatever he has to be to get elected. There is nothing he won't lie about or flip-flop on to gain power.
I certainly would favor 4 years of Romney over another 4 years of Obama.
Well, good luck to that. Hope you enjoy your new home on the net, wherever it may be.
Firstly, I wouldn’t necessarily believe a Third Party couldn’t win. That’s a common belief perpetuated by the Party Establishments.
Secondly, almost all of us dislike Liberalism. Why support any Liberal whether Republican or Democrat?
Thirdly, can you name the last “Moderate” Republican nominee to win a Presidential election? Since I can’t and I view another “Moderate” as a certain loser, I’d take my chances with a Third Party (Tea Party) candidate.
A slim chance is better than no chance. If we still lose, better to die in a battle you believe in versus a battle you don’t.
“David Yas,
editor of Lawyers Weekly, said Romney is “bucking tradition” by resisting the urge to
fill all remaining judgeships. “
What was the purpose of “resisting the urge”?
Was he trying to curry favor among liberals in preparation for his run for president?
I wasn’t aware of his “gay appointments” either.
Re the MA “gay marriage” bill, the pro-family (majority) got steamrolled and he did nothing.
The situation isn't that simple, Romney is not a place holder, he is a man with a lifelong, anti-conservative agenda, and he is the hand picked candidate of the GOP faction that wants to block any move to the right by the party or the nation.
We can fight and unite against Obama, but Romney as leader of the Republican party with an anti-conservative agenda, and the power of both party leadership and the Presidency, and with the help of a simpatico media is a force much multiplied.
So you don’t want dissenting opinion from a life long conservative?
Yep, and with the blessing of the Republican Establishment.
I so look forward to first taking the Party back, then taking the Country back!
Hey mitt-rino, why don’t you just put a (d) behind your name and do us ALL a favor?
Not if you’re pushing the abortionist, gay rights pushing, gun-grabbing, evil socialist bastard Mitt Romney.
Then I guess we will be stuck with 4 more years of Obama which scares the living hell out of me.
Rebellion is brewing!!
DONT TREAD ON ME!!
I STAND WITH JIM ROBINSON!!!"
Mitt, old boy; you just OUTTED yourself!
I *do* want a real conservative. We have a few running right now. I’ll vote that way in the primary. But I’ll never let my vote in November help put O back in office.
Well, not exactly. I think he’d be delighted for a third party *liberal* to run.
“McCain was pro-life.”
Romney was to the left of McCain on every issue.
