Sarah Palin and the Politics of Winging It (Actually not a terrible column)
The New York Times ^ | June 4, 2011 | Mark Leibovich

Posted on 06/04/2011 1:27:14 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

If a maybe-candidate for president does not issue an “official schedule” to the news media as she tours around in something that closely resembles a campaign bus, did the tour really happen?

You betcha it did — as evidenced by the all-terrain coverage that, true to precedent, trailed Sarah Palin wherever she motored last week.

But how dare she disregard the media like that?

That was a subtext of so much of the press grumbling that followed Ms. Palin and her family as they zigzagged through a Northeast itinerary of “biker caravanning” (at a veterans’ motorcycle rally), historic sightseeing (Gettysburg, etc.), office politicking (the headquarters of her employer, Fox News) and Donald Trump (his own category). By “winging it,” or at least not telling journalists where she was headed next and leading them on what some called a “wild goose chase,” Ms. Palin once again showed contempt for a class of people she plainly despises.

“I don’t think I owe anything to the mainstream media,” Ms. Palin said in an interview aboard her bus with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News.

Ms. Van Susteren’s husband, John Coale, a longtime Democratic fund-raiser who became a Palin friend in 2008, marveled at the media’s nerve. “They have trashed her every which way, and they still expect to be kowtowed to?” he said.

You could argue — as many exasperated bus-chasers argued — that dispensing the most basic of logistical information would not fall under the category of “kowtowing.” Rather, they would say, it would fall somewhere between common courtesy and rudimentary public relations.

But whatever. This is all part of the familiar Palin approach. Call it “The Politics of Doing Whatever the Heck I Want.”

Hahahaha! Sounds like some grudging admiration is building among the ink-stained wretches. And they have Myth Romney's number.

This resulted in some comic spectacles that included Ms. Palin’s using her bus as a decoy at the back entrance of a hotel in Pennsylvania so she could slip out a side entrance; or encountering a Sarah Palin impersonator in Boston and instructing her to “go talk to all these reporters” on her behalf.

I really, really love this lady and her style!

What a great column indeed. He writes for the NY Times but I could not from the text discern his political leanings. And this is an opinion piece. Newsbusters has written of him “...treating Democrats with respect and Republicans with derision...”

The political equivalent of “doing donuts” on Romney’s well manicured lawn.

Not a bad piece of analysis, despite the source.

Not a bad little column. But until these stupid ink-stained wretches admit their role in Palin’s hostility towards them, they will NEVER understand her or report on her honestly.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Sarah reminds me very much of the late Diana. She has charisma and beauty and brilliant intuition and instinctual knowledge of how to annoy and manipulate the media. (When will she do my favorite Diana thing - steal the keys out of reporter’s cars and throw them into bushes or down sewers?!) But being more level-headed, she will endure while Diana went under.

Frame this one - it’s the only nonpartisan coverage of Palin you’re ever likely to see in the NYSlimes.

If nothing else I relish they way she is shaking things up.

Even hints at a 3rd party which has the GOP Establishment overwhelmed with fear.

It gives me great pleasure.

Thanks for posting this 2nd DivisionVet.
The biting and belittling criticisms directed toward his hapless and clueless colleagues covering Palin’s bus trip surprised me, especially coming from the ny times.
Likewise, I was surprised that Palin is cast, generally, in a favorable light while Romney comes across as the lugubrious politician he is.
What is the times up to?

How was this all so widely known? Because a “senior adviser” to Mr. Romney helpfully provided the data to Mike Allen of Politico, author of the influential tip-sheet Playbook, which pretty much every political reporter in Washington and beyond reads. Mr. Allen disseminated the information, interested media types planned their days accordingly and a few hours later, the announcement went off pretty much as planned.

Well, well, well...here's our second 'Journolist,' run by none other than Pollutico's Mike Allen of "Stop Sarah" infamy.

Well, if they TRULY believed Palin as the Republican nominee was Obama's best chance at reelection because she's so "unelectable," then this is exactly the kind of piece they should be doing on a regular basis - to promote her as the nominee so their guy can win. Maybe this lib truly believes it. If so, then they've fallen into a trap of their own making. Wouldn't that be nice?
