INDEPENDENCE, Mo. An alligator caused a lot of commotion for one Independence man Sunday when three Independence police officers shot at his concrete lawn ornament.
Rick Sheridan was working in his garage when he heard gunshots. He went around the back of his house to a pond, where he saw three police officers. The three officers had spotted the gator and were lined up on the bank, shooting at the large reptile.
"The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," Sheridan said.
After realizing their bullets were bouncing off the yard art alligator, police left. Sheridan says now he plans to patch up his wounded gator.
"Well, ya see, there was this huge vicious alligator. Presented a clear and present danger to the whole community.. So, I drew my gun..."
Well it was killed, but the paramedics brought it back, and it’s now resting comfortably and awaiting surgery by its owner. Prognosis is excellent.
They keep better than dead ones.
Uh oh. How pervasive is this “average” cop thingy anyway?
Just goes to show you,
we don’t need no stinkin’ badgers.
Thank you Bob Marley.
How kind of you to provide the surgical supplies, Mr. B!

>>> “Not sure why not kill them right away, except perhaps to keep them fresh.”
I’ve picked up from similar convos between FReepers that it has to do with feeding the turtles in captivity a while to adjust for taste/texture, like corn-feeding cattle for a few weeks before slaughter.
Dunno if it’s true. Never tried it.
As Ron White would say: “You cain’t fix stupid.”
About 50% are even worse.
An obvious case of a reptile dysfunction.
Too bad the heroes didn’t get to finish their reports before they learned their mistake:
“Said reptile advanced menacingly, hissed, and bared its teeth. It then charged toward me at a high rate of advance. Officer Fife and I drew our sidearms and discharged 30 rounds. Observing that the reptile had not gone down, we re-loaded and discharged 30 more. I then applied my tazer until it stopped moving and assumed a rigid position.”
“The property owner told police that the gator was meant to keep people off his property, Gentry said. Officers told him a no-trespassing sign would have been wiser.”
Ahh, so the police would have ignored the hypothetical “No trespassing” sign only to shoot at another lawn ornament. Makes perfect sense. I wonder what prompted them to invade his back yard originally. Clearly they weren’t in pursuit of a criminal nor did they have a warrant. Therefore, they were trespassing.
Isn’t it nice that the officers set such a good example of abiding the laws concerning private property?
