(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Labor Department is distributing almost $12 million to ten organizations "to help ensure the success of adult offenders returning to work.”

The grants of $1,170,000 each will provide training, employment and support services to adult former inmates returning to their communities after serving time in what the Labor Department calls "justice facilities."

"The grants announced today are an investment not just in the futures of former inmates, but also in the communities and families to which they are returning," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

I was trying to say that if the fedgov.con kicked the illegals out there would be jobs for ex cons.

Helping ex-cons get honest work seems like a reasonable idea to me. What do you suppose they’re going to do if they can’t find work?

Every government (particularly federal) program starts out sounding like a 'reasonable idea'.

The problem comes in with the amount of money spent administering the program. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the cost per ex-con ends up being astronomical and the results minimal at best. (Of course, if the program isn't successful, it will need to be expanded and better funded.)

Put them in the military.

Ever been in the military? That's the last thing the military needs.

Things were bad enough when non-criminals were being drafted into the military. Forcing ex-cons into the military would be even worse.

“Put them in the military.”

I met quite a few people when I was in the Navy who enlisted because they were given a choice, at sentencing...”Military or Prison.”

While I don’t know how that “program” worked for the military, I do think that it wouldn’t work today, because being in the Military is a GREAT career/job. There are far more applicants than there are openings now. It’s not unusual for people who enlist to have to wait up to a year to go to boot camp.

In the 80’s Military I think it would work, but with cutbacks coming, it wouldn’t work today.

I agree, the modern military doesn’t need them. But I can’t think of a better way to attempt rehabilitation.
