Willowick SWAT team called to home [for his own good]
News-Hearald ^ | 31 May 2011 | Tracey Read

Willowick police responded this morning to a SWAT situation at a home in the 200 block of East 330th Street.

A woman called officers at 2:20 a.m. saying she had a disagreement with her boyfriend, who had walked to his home nearby.

“He kind of indicated to her that he was going to kill himself with a gun,” Willowick Police Chief Michael Lazor said.

“He had a CCW permit and his girlfriend thought he had assault weapons. There was concern he might be suicidal.”

Around 4:15 a.m., Emergency Response Team negotiators were called out to the scene.

Police repeatedly attempted to reach the man by phone, but he never answered even though it appeared he was up and awake.

The commander of the team decided to use a flash bang — a device that creates a big flash of blinding light and makes a loud noise — on the front lawn to get the man’s attention.

“It worked. He came out and saw the police,” said the chief. “I don’t believe he knew the officers were there before because it was so dark.”

The man was taken into custody for his own safety and taken for a routine medical evaluation.

They need to modernize and get some of those red and blue lights.

Reminds me of an event here in our area several years ago. Ex wife called police and told them ex husband was acting “weirdly” , had been drinking all day and had a GUN!

Swat sneaked up on house, popped a couple of flashbangs, hubbie came around corner and shined flashlight at swat, swat cut him into hamburger!

Coroner said there were no drugs or alcohol or gun on suspect.

Sounded like murder to me, but I am prejudiced!

Silly me. I thought SWAT teams existed to deal with actual criminals who were doing actual illegal things in a manner that required more then the normal officer could safely handle.

That is what I got out of this.

That is just freaking crazy.

Man- every day it gets worse-— we really are living in the 80’s USSR-— complete and utter illegitimacy of the ruling class, and to such an extent it is now comical.

While it is just us conservatives for the moment, I can see with even my liberal co-workers here in NYC, the ruling class has almost lost ALL legitimacy.

When the common people think of you and everything you proclaim as a joke and so absurd it is just laughed off... then it is only a matter of time before you’re gone from one way or another. We are at the very start, but it won’t take long to finish.

I say bad reporting.

you never have a cop just take a person to an involuntary evaluation.

He had to have done SOMETHING.

The man was taken into custody for his own safety and taken for a routine medical evaluation. One weapon — a Glock pistol — was found in the home.

Whoa. Wait a second.

The SWAT team is called because they think he is suicidal and he complys with them........and then they search his home after he is taken away. WTF ?

I wonder if they even asked. I would bet good money they had no search warrant at all to enter his home.

Maybe normal officers can't handle very much these days?

Choose your friends wisely. Even Chris Rock is smart enough to tell you not to piss off your girlfriend when the police can be involved. This should be no surprise. This is a classic catch 22. Mental health titles provide for evaluation when there are grounds to believe that you may be a threat to yourself or others. A “named witness” alleging that you have made “credible threats” virtually assures that you will be taken into custody and evaluated. Failure to act on the part of the police would be dereliction of duty.
Be very careful about sharing.

Hmmmm -maybe he didn't answer the phone because he thought it was her calling.

I wonder if the lady (Hell hath no fury like...) called and added ‘assault weapons’ which he did not have, hoping they'd pull a SWAT Raid like so many we hear of....and he would end up very dead.

He's probably well rid of her -

Same here. Cell phone get turned off at night or left in another room.

Same thing with the house phone. I just unplug the base station until the morning.

Just wait until they decide to call in SWAT because you are eating too much salt and not enough arugula.

They did, so I suppose that they can. This is not the same Country that it was. The police can do as they damn well please. And when they please.

A firearms permit has become a permit for the police to legally take you out as a threat.

The influential anti-gun organizations are pushing that as policy, just like they are pushing to consider those with anti-abortion bumper stickers as terrorists. http://www.newswithviews.com/Mary/starrett197.htm

It happens every day. I listen to the scanner almost every waking hour and there were three tactical situations related to second hand “suicidal threats” in my county of about 600,000 today.

Granted, none of them involved flash bangs, but the cops set up on the houses and made the occupants come out. In one case, the occupant came out and got into his car, not knowing the cops were out there. They stopped his car and eventually let him go since there was no evidence he was any threat to himself or others.

Perhaps. Having been a cop for 30 years I can tell you that there are some very ignorant ones who have no clue what it is they are allowed or authorized to do and as a result screw up by the numbers more often than you want to know.
Also, having swat respond to such a call is nonsense.
