Sarah Palin was asked Tuesday about the sticky subject of ethanol subsidies, and she said that not only they should they be squelched but that all federal energy subsidies should be eradicated.
"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be relooked at today and eliminated," Palin told Real Clear Politics at a coffee shop in Dillsburg, Pa. "And we need to make sure that we're investing and allowing our businesses to invest in reliable energy products right now that aren't going to necessitate subsidies because, bottom line, we can't afford it."
Ever the maverick, Palin was responding was in direct opposition to Mitt Romney, who last week in Iowa, came out in favor of government subsidies for ethanol, the fuel produced from corn and other farm products.
"I support the subsidy of ethanol. I believe ethanol's an important part of our energy solution in this country," Romney told a supporter from West Des Moines on Friday.
Neither former governor has officially stated his or her intention to run for the GOP nomination for president; however, Romney is expected to throw his hat in the ring later this week.
One former governor who has committed to running is Tim Pawlenty. In fact, it was in his statement announcing his candidacy that he also backed the elimination of ethanol and other energy subsidies. Unlike Palin, however, Pawlenty wants to take it slowly.....

If we have to tease and coax the figures to prove that a fuel is actually a viable source of energy, then there’s a problem.
To test whether something really is a fuel: remove any subsidies - and remove any taxes from competing fuels. Then see if anyone buys it.
Anything else is just a mare’s nest.
Your post 159: very impressive.
As the late great Georgia humorist Lewis Grizzard once said:
“Naked” means you don't have any clothes on- “Nekkid” means you don't have any clothes on and you're up to something.”
So the farmers’ costs for his equipment are not part of his costs, you say? But just with regard to this one purpose?
Iowa, too!
Iowa, too!
There's a difference?
We need to nominate somebody like Mittens who tailors what he says to his audience.
Or Obama! If the GOP nominates Obama, WE CAN'T LOSE!!!
Define subsidy...
In this context it would be public money paid to keep the price of a commodity artificially low.
I like it. Add me to your "pro" ratio.
Two objectives which MUST be achieved in '12: Eject Zer0, and gain full control of both houses of congress. Staying home will not achieve them.
Congress is arguably more important as legislation originates there. A conservative congress would send bills to a Romney's desk that he would almost be forced to sign, and have his feet held to the fire if he would not do so.
Done, now 54:11
I don't like to call them progressives because it steals a perfectly good word. I call them "progressivists" because it makes clear that it's about a political agenda, and not the ideal of human progress which I think we all support.
Thanks for clearing that up. I didn’t have reason to doubt that, but I didn’t want to take some caller on the radio’s story as gospel. So, now I’ll take an anonymous forum poster instead. :) But it’s corroboration and I can look it up if I need to later for some reason. Thanks.
Stick that in your green pipe and smoke it, Obama!!!
Yeah, but I drove my methanol fueled car only a quarter mile each time.
Yes, but almost every American got rooked big time except the following people:
Marxists in positions of power, (this includes communists=environmentalists and fascists), government employees (public masters), and crony capitalists.
It also created a cost/fraud ripple effect that robbed the ordinary people worldwide.
It is true that I am an anyomous retired hog farmer, and so there is not much more reason to believe me than the caller.
However, the documented large scale unviversity trials are not anonymous, they have the names of respected researchers who studied the efficienty over many years, using thousands of cattle, hogs, and poultry being fed various rations with various amounts of distillers grains, both dried and wet.
The evidence is overwhelming, and conclusive.
I simply boiled it all down to one sentence 'Three semiloads of corn produce one semiload of ethanol and two semiloads of feed.' If you dig into the research you will find I have understated the amount of both that comes from the three loads.
As would I.
"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be relooked at today and eliminated,"
This is the first clear clue we wont get the chance.
Yes she does. And as someone who used to play on the energy side, there are subsidies for everyone. Take them out, and let the devil take the hindmost!
I say this as an engineer who worked in ethanol, and thinks there is a place for it (focus on the feed side).
I was invited to work on an algae bio diesel pilot plant.
Ten minutes into the phone conversation, I knew the guy was trying to get grants and not trying to make a viable product.
And that was talking football for the first five minutes.
I know the Germans had wood-buring cars, so I guess ethanol is better than that. But what IS its place, exactly?
