By WILLIE SOON AND PAUL DRIESSEN The Environmental Protection Agency recently issued 946 pages of new rules requiring that U.S. power plants sharply reduce their (already low) emissions of mercury and other air pollutants. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson claims that while the regulations will cost electricity producers $10.9 billion annually, they will save 17,000 lives and generate up to $140 billion in health benefits. There is no factual basis for these assertions. To build its case against mercury, the EPA systematically ignored evidence and clinical studies that contradict its regulatory agenda, which is to punish hydrocarbon use. Mercury has always existed naturally in Earth's environment. A 2009 study found mercury deposits in Antarctic ice across 650,000 years. Mercury is found in air, water, rocks, soil and trees, which absorb it from the environment. This is why our bodies evolved with proteins and antioxidants that help protect us from this and other potential contaminants. Another defense comes from selenium, which is found in fish and animals. Its strong attraction to mercury molecules protects fish and people against buildups of methylmercury, mercury's biologically active and more toxic form. Even so, the 200,000,000 tons of mercury naturally present in seawater have never posed a danger to any living being.

Same here. Coach ... who doubled as the science teacher had a jar of mercury and went around to each kid and poured a bit in our hands so we could play with it while he lectured about it in class.
So they can ban the CFL bulbs, and make us dependent on them for light.
The regulations will cost electricity CONSUMERS $10.9 billion annually!
There, fixed it!
Yes, indeed. Next on the EPA hit list is di-hydrogenoxide. Do you know how many bilions of dollars will be saved when we finally ban this most dangerous of compounds?
So they can play musical chairs with our income. Next step is banning cfl bulbs, bringing back candles or something.
I listened to a presentation at e Bostn Sci Museum last mont. It was given by a leading expert From MIT. She clearly showed that the US produces very little mercury emissions, but is poisened but those of China and other developing countries. The US governs the mercury emissions, and the others don’t. Mercury gets into the atmosphere and deposits on us. We could eliminate all of our mercury and that wont change the level of poluton we suffer. The answer has to come from China and others; fat chance of that.
So let’s pass more feel good laws that shackle our businesses. Let’s pretend we are responsible and pay for false promises. Let’s pretend that government isn’t the problem, the cause of America’s ills.
If that was true, regulations wouldn't drive producers into bankruptcy, which they routinely do. I suggest you brush up on the economic substitution effect and the indifference curve.
The point is, there is a limit to what customers will pay when regulations drive up the price of a good before they seek a substitute good.
The benefits of hormesis are also being ignored.
In Hell the President of the United States is a half-Kenyan Marxist.
Nice way to come out swinging. Your initials should be KO.
Quicksilver ping.
Thanks bigheadfred.
‘I’ve been using CFL bulbs for over ten years now. The little old house here has those post-wwii globe fixtures, screws to open ‘em, and I got tired of the incandescents (including 130 volt, oven, and fan bulbs) burning out all the time.
I’ve never replaced any of the CFLs.
I’ve never had them burn the house down, blow up, break, make any noises, anything.
I’m sure that the psychics around here are ready to tell me how I’m *going* to have all those problems, just like psychics of a different rant have told me that it’s only a matter of time before I’m victimized by police brutality.
Take a guess how many have died due to methyl mercury in the U.S.
Answer: Two
One was a hog farmer in New Mexico — fungacide
the other was a researcher...she dropped a drop of it on her arm. Died within weeks.
I am desperately looking for more. FREEPERS! Please post if you know of any. Thanks!
Good post. The government doesn’t talk about that anymore.
Doesn’t China put lead in their candles, or maybe in the wicks? How many items does China dump on the U.S. with banned substances?

From Wikipedia:
"Although the name "Mad Hatter" was clearly done and inspired by the phrase "as mad as a hatter", there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase. Mercury was used in the process of curing pelts used in some hats, making it impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hat making process; hatters and mill workers thus often suffered mercury poisoning, causing neurological damage, including confused speech and distorted vision."
Ive been using CFL bulbs for over ten years, now I don’t have to leave the comfort and safety of my computer chair.

And as far as police brutality experiences go, turn on your ESP. Use your CFT (Canya Feel This) bulb. I’ll share.

That $10.9 billion will be lining somebody's pockets. Most likely those with political connections.
