CATE Blanchett has sparked outrage in the community with her decision to front an advertising campaign promoting the Federal [Australian] Government's controversial carbon tax.
The millionaire Hollywood actor has been accused of being out of touch by spruiking the benefits of the tax that she can afford to pay, unlike many already hard-up Australians.
The 42-year-old has teamed with Packed to the Rafters actor Michael Caton to be the faces of a series of TV ads branded "Say Yes", which will screen nationally from tonight.
The ads are aimed at convincing the average Australian that a carbon tax is a good idea, even if it is tipped to raise the cost of living.
But then there are more than 50 million reasons why Blanchett has different concerns to the average Australian.
In 2009, BRW estimated the Oscar winner's wealth at $53 million, putting creature comforts like a $10 million mansion in Hunters Hill on Sydney's North Shore well within the budget.
And it is why critics have lashed the film star for fronting the campaign while battlers do the sums to figure out how they will pay the bills when the tax is imposed.
"It's nice to have a multi-millionaire who won't be impacted by it telling you how great it is," Terri Kelleher, from The Australian Families Association, said. "It's easy for her to advocate it - she's one of the people who can afford to pay it. There are people who have no comfort zone and no room to move."
Anti-carbon tax campaigner Senator Barnaby Joyce said the ad made Blanchett look "self-indulgent". "Fifty-three million dollars gives you a whole heap of latitude to care about a lot of things," Senator Joyce said.

“spruiking”?? Liberalism in every continent is the same. I do not have any problem with her success financially but the hypocrisy is valid.
It reminds me of the MSNBC.com article about the benefits of skyhigh gas prices.
Speaking of which, does anyone have some serious trouble regarding the gas prices. Not to mention the rise in price of just about everything else that needs shipping by some sort of motorized vehicle.
no...high gas prices are okay now since the present occupants of the WH are rats...they were not okay when two “oil men” ran the country....
the media can disguise it all they want- the sh1t will hit the fan against obozo if gas prices stay in the high $3/low $4....hopefully the dumbass does something stupid like use some of the emergency reserve in 9/12- the independents who got him elected already see through his BS....
I had to look her up to know who she is.
I always wondered who that stunningly bad actress in Indiana Jones was........ Now I know.
Liberal term for keister chlorine I think....
It borders on prostitution.
Haha. Point taken. However, I do take issue with “her success because it is built on government-friendly companies.
She was better as Queen Elizabeth, and in the Lord of the Rings as the Elf Queen Galadriel. Like Ian McKellan and the other LOTR actors, I wish she would shut up about politics and act.
What a dope. It’s to bad, she’s a great actress. These greenies are making it hard on everyone. The tax is just one more burden that will accomplish little to nothing.
spruiking ?
I understand it to mean “to promote” or “to give a speech in favor of something”.
“Speechifying” comes to mind as a similar term we might use in the States.
Haha she was better in Lord of the Rings. But point taken: she needs to work on her foreign accents if she wants to be taken seriously.
She looks good there.

Her god is global warming same as Kate Blanchette. Australians are a rambunctious lot. They don't take to being lectured by Hollywood actresses when it is going to make them poorer.
Nah, That’s Kevin Rudd.
