WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) The number of people who filed applications for unemployment benefits rose by 10,000 last week, keeping claims at a level typically associated with modest to below-average hiring trends, according to the latest data released Thursday.
The Labor Department said 424,000 people filed new applications for jobless benefits in the week ended May 21, compared to an upwardly revised 414,000 in the prior week. A government official said no special factors were involved.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected claims to decline to a seasonally adjusted 405,000.
Requests for unemployment benefits have remained above 400,000 for seven straight weeks after falling to a three-year low of 375,000 in mid-February.
In a period of strong economic growth and rapid hiring, weekly claims usually fall well below 400,000.

The level of spin and cover for Obami is incredible. This 400,000 number was at or near 300,000 during the BOOSH years.
unexpected Obumpa
All together now, “Un-Expected!”
What Bush years are you talking about? Certainly, not all 8 years.
A ‘4’ handles seven straight weeks. hmmm....

The fact is that the ‘ants’ saw the ‘progressive’ tsunami coming and prepared accordingly to weather the storm lean and agile.
Drink!!!
I mean the press/DIMS/Commies were pushing was that it had to be under 300,000 to be robust growth.
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
