It truly is remarkable the way he manages to look like a prick even when he is pretending to be humble.

It isn't pretending to be humble -- it's trying to be cool and suave by pretending to know the host country's social customs, and looking like a dork because of having no clue about how the subtleties of precedence work.

If you watch Americans interact socially in places with a bowing tradition, you see them committing these sorts of gaffes routinely -- men bowing to women, or to someone junior to them, that sort of thing.
