Wow—we just were there last month. Small plane returning from a Grand Canyon tour, no doubt

(Excerpt)

SEDONA, AZ - ABC15 has learned an aircraft went off the runway at the Sedona Airport.

Airport employee Jason Mudge told ABC15 there were no injuries reported at this time.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the unidentified aircraft “slid off the runway and down the mesa.”

Mudge said the aircraft went through a fence and slid about 100 yards into a ravine.

It’s hard not to go off a cliff, the thing is on a mesa, land uphill, take off downhill.

land uphill, take off downhill

I don't recall there being an "uphill" or "downhill" - but for sure you don't want to land long or hot cause either direction you're going over the edge...

I’d be more inclined to say ‘land into the wind, take off into the wind’ since it is air speed and not ground speed that provides lift.

Maybe they got caught in a vortex? (nyuk-nyuk)

Glad everyone is okay.

P.S. Great breakfasts at the Airport Restaurant there.

...you don't want to land long or hot cause either direction you're going over the edge...

I was once along for a ride with a fellow trying to land there, except that he got confused on the landing speed for that particular airplane (he thought he was flying "the other" airplane, which he usually flew).

At the end of the runway, we were too fast to stop and several-tens-of-knots too slow to fly.

Off into space we plummeted. Fortunately, the trade-altitude-for-airspeed trick worked for us, and about that time he remembered that "this" airplane landed 30 KIAS slower than "that" airplane. Flew back to PHX and the final landing was uneventful.

Definitely had to be a Vortex event. For those not in the know, Sedona is the location of one of the world’s new age vortexes. Supposedly, its exact location is right there on the airport mesa. That is what accounts for all of the new age freaks and shops in town.
