The Texas Senate's 12 Democrats formed a united front against a revived "sanctuary cities" bill Monday as Hispanic leaders argued that it would lead to racial profiling and undercut relations between law enforcement and Latino communities.
Several Hispanic residents from Tarrant County drove to Austin to participate in a rally on the south grounds of the Capitol after the bill appeared to regain renewed momentum over the weekend.
The Rev. Stephen Jasso, pastor of the All Saints Catholic Church in Fort Worth, said the measure would "hurt and endanger" Latino communities.
The bill, SB12, is one of Gov. Rick Perry's top legislative priorities and would allow local law enforcement officers to inquire about immigration status when making arrests. Perry has aimed the measure at so-called sanctuary cities that critics say are havens for illegal immigrants.
But as the Legislature entered its final full week, opponents escalated their attacks on the House-passed bill and said they hope to stop it if it comes up on the Senate floor before the May 30 adjournment.
"We cannot afford this type of divisive legislation and the resulting long-term unsustainable costs to our state and our communities," the Senate Democrats, including Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, said in a joint letter released Monday.
Senate rules require 21 votes (2/3rds of the 31 senators) to bring up a bill. Although Democrats could block the bill, Republicans who control the chamber could conceivably suspend the two-thirds requirement to push the sanctuary city bill onto the floor for a vote, the bill's opponents said.
Maria Robles of Arlington, a mother of four, said she got up at 3 a.m. to drive to Austin for the rally. About two dozen demonstrators stood along the main walkway, many of them holding U.S. flags and placards denouncing the bill.

Not if they're here legally.
Sanctuary cities are against federal law. The problem is that the feds are not enforcing the laws.
>the measure would “hurt and endanger” Latino communities.
If people want Latino communities then they need to go to Latin America. In the United States of America we have
American communities. Is it really that hard to understand? Assimilate or gtfo of America.
Go to any of the other countries and try to create an American community that conspires to allow illegal aliens and see just how “endangered” you will become.
Future voters. The Democrats view illegals as future dependent, social services-slurping voters.
The Federal Government has no intention of enforcing immigration laws as the rank and file Border Patrol are being told what to do by Globalist Marxist thugs like Nappy, My Peeps and the Mumbling Muslim...and endorsed by Jorge Bush and Lindsay Grahamnesty.
Two dozen protested?
Wow, according to the State-Controlled Media, that’s more than 8/28/10 at the Glenn Beck rally!
Ping!
IMO, this is part of the problem. Large areas of Houston are unrecognizable as American cities.
A subculture within our borders, poverty stricken, Latino gangs roaming the night, most signs / advertising in Spanish, crime rates inproportionatly high...seriously now.
I walked into a Brookshire Brothers supermarket on Houston's southeast side, I couldn't believe my eyes. Try it sometime, it'll alarm the hell into ya.
These people could care less about being American, they do not care to learn English, nor do they care to assimilate into our society.
Latino communities??? Yeah, nice!
“”We cannot afford this type of divisive legislation and the resulting long-term unsustainable costs to our state and our communities,” the Senate Democrats, including Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, said”
And giving taxpayer money to welfare frauds isn’t divisive?
Sheltering murderers and gangbangers isn’t divisive?
Favoring invaders over Americans isn’t divisive?
How do slimey pigs like this get elected? Some parts of America need to be declared in insurrection and all federal voting privileges taken away until those voters can demonstrate sanity.
Even Jorge Bush labeled the border watch group, Minutemen....vigilantes.
What an insult, it's just plain embarrassing that our leaders are pissing on their own citizens.
CITY OF HOUSTON VOTERS go here:

Maybe we can run two separate petitions...I still have the old sanctuary city one from the last run.
Thanx brotha
petitions cannot be started legally until late May 0f 2012 so this is simply gathering folks around the fire.
Gotcha
The Left has been infiltrating churches for a long time. The Catholic Church is a main target. They infiltrate to subvert the message.
As long as Americans continue electing these same leaders nothing will change.
This was the same bogus headline used by the Houston Comical.
The Democrats are NOT against Sanctuary Cities. They are FOR them. They are against this bill that opposes sanctuary cities and attempts to prevent police officers from acting on knowledge that someone is in this country illegally.
I’ve seen it firsthand where police officers pull over a non-US hispanic driver, ready to ticket him for speeding, running a red light, etc. and getting ready to ream him even with the prospect of being DWI only to cut him loose without so much as even a warning because they CANNOT ask if the person (say from Spain or Mexico) is legally here. They don’t want to prosecute the illegals so even the legal visitors get off without charge.
