Studies released Thursday by the Guttmacher Institute and the Brookings Institution show that unintended pregnancies in the U.S. cost taxpayers roughly $11 billion per year. The Guttmacher Institute notes that this estimate is conservative, as it is only considers public insurance costs for pregnancy and first-year infant care. The studies also find that government programs could save billions by preventing unintended pregnancies.
The Guttmacher study found that 64% of births resulting from unintended pregnancies were to women enrolled in publicly funded health care programs, while only 35% of intended births were publicly funded. Adam Sonfield, one of the studyâs authors, remarked, "At a time when policymakers everywhere are looking for ways to cut costs under Medicaid, these findings point clearly to a way to achieve that goal by expanding access to health care, not cutting it."
Adam Thomas, an author of the Brookings Institution's study, said "Like Sonfield and colleagues, we find that the potential public savings from preventing unintended pregnancy are enormous." The Brookings study found that taxpayers could save about $5.6 billion annually through efforts to prevent those pregnancies.
The study comes at a time when a number of states are considering legislation to cut family planning. Earlier this month, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed a bill making Indiana the first state to defund Planned Parenthood. Lawmakers in Kansas and North Carolina are attempting to pass similar legislation.
That false assumption is what leads liberals to be liberals -
that people don’t respond to incentives and consequences.
This is why libs reject the idea of free markets and capitalism in favor of controlled economies.
The words stupid and irresponsible, when talking about sexual intercourse have been replaced with the phrase “unplanned pregnancy”. The truth is that every time a man and woman engage in sexual intercourse they are planning a pregnancy. After all, isn’t that what sexual intercourse is for?
Ironically, the left’s “solution” for global warming is for everyone to sit around in the dark and shiver...
and if you’re in mixed company, that’ll lead to more humans.
Not subsidizing the costs of unplanned pregnancy certainly would not get rid of the problem, but it would significantly reduce it to the point where it is more of an aberration instead of a rule. Teenage pregnancies were not a major problem until the government decided it would start paying for the costs of them, as well as paying for the costs of the children that resulted.
“unintended pregnancies”
Yeah, right! There may be a few (very, very few), who don’t understand ‘where babies come from’, who get pregnant. But 99%+ know that if you copulate, you can become pregnant.
If you copulate, there is a good chance you will become pregnant/father a child.
If you drive after drinking, there is a good chance that you will either:
1) get a ticket
2) cause an accident
3) kill someone
It is called Personal Responsibility.
Actions have consequences.
“Gee, I didn’t plan to end up in debt to the mob for $100,000. I only went to Vegas, party-ed, drank like a fish and hit the casinos?”
We laugh/wince at the idiots in the “Hey Bubba, hold my beer. Watch this!” videos which end in disaster.
Skateboard jumps onto a handrail can & do created eunuchs.
If you don’t want an “unplanned pregnancy”, don’t copulate until you are prepared to become pregnant/father a child.
Simple rule, simple result.

For many young girls in a dysfunctional family setting,
getting a free apartment, free food, utilities, etc,
for having a baby out of wedlock
is too great an incentive to pass up.
“Government sponsored child bearing” is a “profession” these days.
So, get yourself out there and start a foundation to support the fruit of their unwise decisions. You don’t have time to be on the internet chatting with the rest of us!
I believe unplanned but welcome pregnancies have been the norm from the beginning of time.
Exactly!!!!
Abortions kill future productive workers and taxpayers.
How does this “cost” society or government?
I don’t know and personally don’t care, abortion should be ended it’s murder. But, your talking different cultures too. Some of which don’t know how babies are made, most aren’t Christian. Think their manhood depends on how many kids they have, especially male babies. Women don’t have the same rights, ect.
Right
They have always been a major problem, just very well-kept secrets. Besides, kids were not as mobile as they are now, and there whereabouts were more controlled. I’m sure that if kids didn’t have jobs, after-school activities, vehicles, and 2 parents that work full-time, things would be like they were in the good ole days. That’s just not reality.
Sorry, too busy. Besides, at my age too much work and I wouldn’t even know how to start. Guess it will just continue as is.
2011 and you think there are cultures that don’t know how babies are made? Ireland, Malta, most every Catholic country in Central and South America?
Well, and a lot easier to let other people pay for it. I get it.
We each pay something. I’m doing my part through my taxes, just like most everyone else. I’ll leave the fund-raising for whatever cause to those that know how.
