Aron Rottenberg is recovering at Westchester Medical Center with burns on 50 percent of his body. The pain is excruciating, his family says. He was burned when he and his son wrestled with a would-be arsonist who on 4 a.m. Sunday had placed flammable rags on Rottenberg's wooden back porch in New Square and tried to light them, according to police.
Four hours later, cops arrested Shaul Spitzer, 18, who lives nearby. He had burns on his hands. He was charged with arson, attempted murder, and assault.
Rottenberg's wife and daughters were at home sleeping when his son saw on security cameras there was a man in the backyard. They could have died in the fire according to police and the victim's son in law.
Moshe Elbaum, the victim's son-in-law, said Rottenberg's problems began after he started a prayer group in the Friedwald Center instead of the main synagogue of the Skver Hasidim, a block away.
Elbaum said that last year the rabbi of the synagogue, David Twersky, announced no one should pray outside the main synagogue.
That day, Rottenberg's car windows were broken, then his house windows, then 100 people chanted outside his home "Aron Rottenberg, leave the neighborhood," then the attempted firebombing.
Police acknowledged that these incidents occurred but have made no arrests in any of them. They also said they have no known motive for Sunday's attempted firebombing.
Cops said Spitzer, who will be arraigned form his hospital bed, will not speak to them.
It’s all about “control”
Wow. I hate to say it, but it really would be huge national news if a Christian pastor had said something and it caused window smashes, 100 people chanting for someone to leave town, and attempted murder.
It’s the 100 people part that gets me. **If that’s true**, it’s a sizeable chunk of the congregation.
religious fanatics are dangerous. period
WOW, that’s totally insane. God bless him, I can’t imagine anything more painful than burns :(
obama voters, all.
I think this is the group that voted 100% for Hillary for Senate.
This is a scary bunch, growing fast via birth rate.
Wasn’t it more like %105?
But no more dangerous than people who view sincerely religious people as fanaticle and dangerous.
That would be Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, and a fair number of freepers.
Lol. What a ridiculous statement. According to you, a “fair number of FReepers” are as dangerous as Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jung Il. Lol.
If you really believed that, you’d be foolish to continue to visit this site.
That’s going “all in” on the victim card.
Who is a scary bunch?
Exactly. It looks like some fraction of the congregation didn't like Rabbi Twersky's theology, and decided to leave the synagogue and pray by themselves, and this upset the majority who decided to stay.
In a cult, you are not allowed to leave. Leaving implies that the individual has power rather than the group and that there is a possibility that the cult is wrong. Very dangerous to group-think
I would guess that a number of neighbors would have noticed that big a gathering, and several may be willing to come forward as witnesses.
It looks like a pattern of violence and intimidation against the victim's exercising of his First Amendment rights, a conspiracy by a majority of an identifiable group.
A good civil rights lawyer would have Mr Rottenberg owning the synagogue building.
The Grand Rebbe David Twersky and the New Square Skverer hasidim.
That's why they are pushing to get a Federal investigation. Even though this news escaped the highly controlled New Square information wall (only because of the severe injury), the local authorities are quite used to turning a blind eye.
