Twin Rivers Unified School District's use of AmeriCorps volunteers has pleased parents and angered the California School Employees Association, which has filed an unfair practice charge with the Public Employment Relations Board.
It is the second charge the CSEA and its Twin Rivers chapter have filed with PERB since April. Both charges are in the initial review stage, a PERB official said.
Parents are countering the first charge with a petition to keep the youthful AmeriCorps volunteers, who tutor kids, hold after-school activities and assist in school cleanup events.
Officials at the CSEA and its Twin Rivers chapter say the district is replacing trained teacher aides with "college kids with no training," said Carlo Tarantola, CSEA labor relations representative.

Get out the popcorn...
“Volunteers”... who get paid.
Can we root for both sides to lose? These Americorp “volunteers” are effectively paid with our tax dollars. It’s just a matter of which pig is at the trough of our money.
Do I get paid?
For all AmeriCorps programs, members receive a modest living allowance, and some programs provide housing. You may not save much money during your year of service, but most members find the living allowance to be adequate to cover their needs. AmeriCorps members who complete a term of service also receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
Reportedly unions will now sue an parent who tries to teach a child anything without one of their union members present. They’ve learned about a mother trying to potty train a child without a representative present and they don’t like it at all. The union representative stated that having members in peoples home was a good source of overtime and they’ll not let it stop without a fight.
Volunteers performing a valuable service and actually helping children with their educational endeavors ...... well, my goodness, we just can’t have that. Dem der be yoonyun yobs.
Unions v. Americorps—sort of a civil war?
