Positive OC at Chili's West Lebanon (NH)

So the misses and I decided to go to Chili's Grill and Bar in West Lebanon last night. I have OC'd there many of times in the past. We were sitting in the bar area, and the side of the table I was sitting at my strong side was facing out. After we sat down for about five minutes talking about our days at work. I short gentleman approached "The Manager" who looked to be someone new because I had never seem him before. He was extremely nervous, forehead sweating, hands shaking, stuttering his words, but he said "Excuse me may I see your firearms permit". I replied back with, "You know I am OC'ing and am not required to have a permit right?" Again he said very nervously "May I please see your permit". I started to pull it out of my wallet to hand it to him and he said "Thank you enjoy your dinner and walked away".

The misses and I after he walked away were talking about how scared and nervous he was to ask me. I actually felt bad for the guy because he was so scared to approach me. So after dinner I asked the waitress to go grab the manager. He came over and I started off by saying "The food and service was great I wanted to personally thank you very much". He said we were welcome and then said to me "That his district manager just left. That is why I asked for your permit because he told me to. After I asked for it and went back I told him we have to figure out what the gun laws are in New Hampshire because I do not think they are the same as in Massachusetts". At that point I chimed in and said "No they are nothing like Massachusetts" I then referred him to the state of New Hampshire website which details RSA 159 I also added that in New Hampshire if there is not a law in there that says you can not do it then it would be legal to do. Ie: Open Carrying. He said thank you and we were welcome back anytime.

Okay, you got me on that one. Still I think this guy went looking for a confrontation. He got what he wanted by sitting with his "strong side" out.

We can agree to disagree. I am impressed that you admitted to the error. That moves you up on the freeper scale. You might also consider Goldwater's dictum:

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!"

Re: Goldwater's Dictum - I do not question his right to be armed. I have questioned his motives vis-a-vis his writing style and word usage.

What is the point of saying "my strong side out" in the first place? He wanted his weapon seen so that it would cause a reaction. Most people I know who carry are very reluctant to do it obviously for a variety of reasons but the most prevalent is they see no need for a confrontation.

This issue of OC is a controversial one whether we like it or not. The fact that he wrote the blog at all tells me that he wanted to flaunt his desire to OC.

Is OC the norm in NH or is it new.

Here in CT there was a recent ruling that there is nothing in the CT laws that prohibits OC yet I do not see people carrying openly.

I am impressed that you admitted to the error.

Hmmmm.... I got caught. Why not admit it and move on? Isn't that what honorable people do? But thanks for the kudos.

There are reasonably responsible persons who openly carry every day.

They wear uniforms and badges, and present in situations that require the presentation of possible exertion of lethal force.

I camp out with some guys that are essentially lunatics, and they love their guns. Nothing like a hillbilly with a 30 pack of bud light in his belly and a loaded 1911 in his holster.

The first 18 years of my life were in Michigan. The next 20 were all over the world serving in the U.S. Navy. The next 10 have been in New England, where I’m still considered an outsider.

I’ve never heard anyone talk openly about revoking a gun permit because of someone practicing their right to OC.

I just think this guy was being an ass.

Wife: Let’s go to Chili’s for dinner.
Husband: Sounds good, let me get my gun.
Wife: You’re a stud and that gun proves it.
Husband: I know, and I love the the attention I get from it.

If not for provocation, why else would anyone OC at Chili’s for dinner with the wife?

I’m not saying he needs an excuse, NH is a place you can OC, but I question his motive.

I worked in a western=themed amusement park. We had a man open carry in the park one day and I asked him to put his gun back in his car. We he became indignant I had to tell him “The park is full of guns carried by cowboys. All of these guns shoot blanks. I know because I have played a cowboy. It is not unusual for a child or Down Syndrome kid to pull your gun out of your holster and point it at you. ‘Stick em up’. Sometimes we even have to chase them to get the gun. I’m pretty sure you don’t want that to happen”. He put the gun in his car.

I expect a crap storm shortly from other parties.

And you would deserve it! I took the time to look at your page before posting and saw your only statement was that you were "born and raised in Massachusetts and proud of it". Now I understand why you spew idiocy and hatred about someone exercising their legal right.

“Still I think this guy went looking for a confrontation”

Well Duh! He’s doing this specifically to let people see the gun and to refamiliarize the public with open carry rights. If he, and people like him don’t do this, we will lose that right.

New Hampshire police are starting to know the OC laws now, completely thanks to a few people in Manchester and Lebanon who make a point to carry in public in a regular basis.

I appreciate their efforts. A local restaurant is a great place to open carry. It’s a non-threatening environment with plenty of people.
