George W. Bush made $15M on speaking circuit

By: Jennifer Epstein May 20, 2011 09:05 AM EDT

Before he left the White House, George W. Bush said he had plans to “replenish the ol’ coffers” by making a ‘ridiculous’ amount of money on the lecture circuit.

Like other recent former presidents, he’s done just that.

In the two years since leaving office, Bush has earned an estimated $15 million at $100,000 to $150,000 per speech, the Center for Public Integrity reported Friday. Bush’s spokesman, David Sherzer, said the former president has delivered about 140 paid speeches. Sherzer did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for comment Friday morning.

Earlier this month, Bush turned down an invitation to join President Barack Obama at the World Trade Center for a ceremony marking the killing of Osama bin Laden, with Sherzer telling POLITICO that “President Bush appreciated the invite but has chosen in his post-presidency to remain largely out of the spotlight.” Former President Bill Clinton also turned down an appearance at the event, citing scheduling conflicts.

The next week, though, Bush was on the lecture circuit and weighed in on bin Laden’s death when speaking to a paying audience at a conference for hedge fund managers at a luxurious Las Vegas hotel. He told the crowd there that Obama had made a “good call” in choosing to carry out the raid on bin Laden’s Pakistani compound but said he was “not overjoyed” by the killing. The remarks became public only a few days later when they were reported by ABC News.

No one is being forced to pay money to hear a former President speak

Unlike Clinton, GWB hasn’t gone offshore and gotten paid to criticize his successor

Jimmy Carter makes money by trashing this country.
George W. Bush makes money by being respectful.

I know who the media prefers.

But how can the MSM criticize Bush, when Bill Clinton made over $100 million on the speaking circuit after his presidency?

Or, are liberals held to a different standard than conservatives?????

Except Politico makes it a headline for Bush and buries it at the end of the article for Clinton. Media bias? What media bias? s/

Nobody made out on the speaking circuit like 'Toon made out. The guy went from not having a pot to p*ss in to having tens of millions.

Of course this didn't interest the liberal media in the least.

Don’t be silly. Who in the world would want to hear from GWB? And who would pay money to hear from him? /s The media will hide this.

I respected his efforts in the WOT. But I for one could never pony over a dollar to hear G.W. Bush call me a “nativist” or “xenophobe” for opposing amnesty for illegals, as he did in a vile SMU speech.

Good for him. I bet obozo will be doing the same thing in 2013, but will charge $1 million per speech. Of course, that may not buy much by then.

Former President Bill Clinton also turned down an appearance at the event, citing scheduling conflicts.

It’s hilarious to me how the Politico types absolutely exulted over Slick Willie and others from the left making big bucks on the rubber chicken circuit; but let a someone like GW do it and they have an instant case of severe redbutt!
