I'm looking for advice concerning buying a handgun.
Recently purchased a Ruger SR40...like the SR9 as well...for a smaller version check out the LC9 or LCR and LCP versions. Reasanably priced, very reliable.
Let’s stop this potential 500 post non-news thread right now. Glock 32.

If it’s your first handgun consider a used small frame .357 magnum revolver.
I rented potential choices at a gun club/range. Got to practice w/them and eventually found a couple that felt like an extension of my arm/hand.
Also...attend some training classes if this is all new to you, as it is for me, I’ve attended three courses so far and look forward to a few more. Various instructors have varying ideas...go in with an open mind and learn all you can.
The NRA is a valuable source as well.
Go with a Glock 17 or 19. I’ve had a 17 for over 15 years and still enjoy shooting it, despite the fact that I have several others to choose from.
I recently got a couple other Glocks, just because I’ve been so happy with this one.
Light, inexpensive, lots of accessories available, ammo is cheap (relatively) and pretty much foolproof.

One other thing—when you’re at the range practicing, keep an eye out for other shooters whose firearms jam. That will assist you re: making a suitable choice. Good luck and have fun!
Go to a good range that rents guns and try some out. You’ll be best with what feels the most comfortable. Take some classes. Learn how to clean your gun and the local laws about securing and, God forbid, having to use it. Don’t be swayed by the experienced shooters preferences on this thread or what the gun mags are touting this month. What works for you is a personal thing. If you want reliablilty check out revolvers, simple to use and clean. Good Luck.

You’re the only poster on this thread with a brain (besides me :)). A gun is a machine and thereby the more complex the more risk of a failure, plus requires more training. Your suggested handgun is simple to operate (pull the trigger and it goes bang) and almost fail proof and will shoot the 38spl which is good if a small person or woman.
I think for the money, you can’t beat a Ruger.
A lot of ranges won’t rent a firearm to someone who comes in without their own firearm for fear of suicide by rental.

Higher capacity magazines and a few new goodies. I have an XD40 subcompact that is my go-to. Reasonably priced and small enough to carry without causing carry fatigue.
1st define what you want the hand gun to do.
Personal Cary ? — go small but not tiny.
Target accurate ? - .22rf
Home Defense ? — Full size Auto or Revolver
Hunting ? -——— Large Frame Revolver
When in doubt for your first hand gun, a .22 is never a bad choice, ammo is cheap, so you can practice a lot.
