How are they supposed to tell the difference between a limp-wristed shooter and a lousy pistol?

Some jams are not the fault of the weapon as they are the fault of the shooter. For instance, almost any Glock can ‘stove pipe’ if the shooter is limp wristed. IOW a less firm recoil stance (resistance) presented by the shooter. Limp wristing takes some of the energy out of the slide and slows the return.
