A landlord has blocked off his plush £1m home with ten skips to stop his tenants from leaving without paying the £15,000 he claims they owe him.
Businessman Simon Everingham says he has been in a constant battle for £3,000-a-month rent since the occupants of his four-bedroom 18th century farmhouse in Markington, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, fell behind with the payments last November.
He barricaded the American tenants Dan and Christina Herring in by blocking the drive on Monday and the fight to stop them leaving continued today.
They work at the controversial Menwith Hill U.S. spy base nearby but say they now need to return to the United States after Mr Herring found a new job.
Mr Everingham, 54, fears that if the family leave the country he will never get his money back.
He claims he is owed rent arrears, legal fees and interest payments.

I am thinking about moving to the Isle of Man.
Way to go Daily Mail. It's not a frickin' secret any more.
financial deadbeats with top security clearances- what’s wrong with this picture?
in my day not paying your bills got your security clearance pulled...these shysters are the types who are ripe for blackmail, theft, and fraud
From the information presented, they owe money and I am okay with their posessions being forfeit.
What’s a skip?
I used to work with a guy that owned a private dirt road in a wealthy area. A woman bought a new house on the road and didn’t think she should have to pay the maintenance fees. The owner asked her personally to pay and she refused. He deposited a dump truck load of gravel at the bottom of her driveway, denying her access to his road. She paid.
It is sort of a dump container in UK.
What’s a dump container? Is it a dumpster?
“controversial Menwith Hill U.S. spy base”
uh...what’s “controversial” about it?
Thanks.

A dust bin on steroids.
like your typical football rowdies.
Great motorcycle racing there.
As long as the fee was no secret when she bought it, good for him.
My mom and her sisters rent out their childhood home and one family never paid rent and had a slew of excuses. When they were finally evicted, they found empty boxes of expensive items that would have covered several months back rent. Some people in life are just out and out cheats and you have to squeeze a little to get them to stay strait.
reading the full article, owner states that the family were bad about paying on time from the beginning. you’d think he’d have learned and not renewed the lease.
Their security clearances was the first thing I thought of, too. They are probably making about $300,000/year together or £200,000 or roughly £17,000/month, so £3,000 rent is very doable. They are deadbeats.
BTW, a place like that in my town would probably rent for close to $4,500/month.
