Their security clearances was the first thing I thought of, too. They are probably making about $300,000/year together or £200,000 or roughly £17,000/month, so £3,000 rent is very doable. They are deadbeats.
BTW, a place like that in my town would probably rent for close to $4,500/month.

there are deadbeats in all walks of life, the richest are sometimes the worst, I hope the Brit guy can get his unpaid debt noted in their credit records
or there is a rent dispute where the landlord is not fixing stuff that landlords are required to have in good repair.
either way engagin in such self help is frowned upon by the law here.
