NEW YORK Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January.
Their demonstrations at the LightFair trade show in Philadelphia this week mean that brighter LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect.
The new bulbs will also be expensive about $50 each so the development may not prevent consumers from hoarding traditional bulbs.

Why should I have to buy a $3 CFL when I can get a 6 pack of incandescents for the same price. I tried the CFL a couple of times and they didn’t even last longer.
We have families who claim they cannot afford to pack a sandwich for their child to take to school.
Got an e-mail from a mom this AM asking for a gas card to get to Childrens Hospital from out of town. Her child has to have regular visits to Childrens Hospital to check his Cancer remission. Our government is insane and has to be replaced for allowing such outlandish things to come upon the people of the United States of America.
I saw at Wally world in So Cal they are already not stocking 100 w bulbs, they have 95 w bulbs instead, more than one way to skin a very dumb cat(Guvmint) LOL!
Gee, ya think?
“I don’t get the upside of this for them”
CFLs sell for $3 - 6 dollars each. Incandescent bulbs sell for about 65 cents.
Haven’t bought any light bulbs lately, so haven’t noticed what’s on the shelves. I’ll have to check the next time I’m at our Wally World. But our store is cutting its inventory to the bone because the store is going super size (They’re going to put everything at close-out levels instead of moving their existing inventory). So, the shelves may not be representative right now.
With the wages that are paid today combined with the high price of rent, Im surprised many families can even pay rent. The cigarettes, beer, and cable probably left long ago. The want ads will show many single digits per hour jobs. 20%+ actual unemployment (vs 9% govt spin) is a terrible thing.
(Recession: your neighbor is unemployed Depression: you are unemployed)
Nothing is impossible for the guy who doesnt have to do it.
I agree completely only fools buy the argument that socialism is about equality.
You aren’t supposed to use them in enclosed lighting
They will cost $50 initially. But like every new technology mass production will make them progressively cheaper over time. LED’s use so little wattage that I think they really are the wave of the future.
That being said, it’s not the government’s place to force the change.

I will start by saying that mandating CFLs is Marxist,
and the government should have to answer to the SCOTUS.
Here in the Philippines I was quite surprised to find that the CFLs are most prominent, even in very rural areas.
While I do not like them, I have become use to their annoying cold color.
I have one on the front porch, one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and one overhead in the bedroom (rarely used).
In two years, I have replaced only one or two of four bulbs, and the porch light stays on all night.
They can, however, and do sometimes fail prematurely.
I use a soft quartz lamp over my computer, and standard incandescent bulbs in my two bedroom lamps.
I think the future is in LED bulbs. They CAN, and will be made very cheaply in the future, and I think they will be able to provide numerous hues of light to fit any situation.
They have already taken over the flashlight business.
I have a little pocket flashlight that has 15 diodes, running on 3 triple-A batteries.
It puts out enough light for me to use while bicycling at
night.
Government subsidies for people who “need” the regular light bulbs because of some sort of allergy, sensitivity, disability, or other issue can’t be far behind followed by the law suits for emotional stress, etc. etc. The new alternative to legislation is to just make things the government desires you to do or buy very inconvenient to the point of being impossible. They just “nudge” you towards what they want. This replaces the former marketplace where advertisers nudge us to prefer their products by making them cheaper or better. We are all children now.Since a light bulb is a symbol of ideas, progress, enLIGHTenment and it is so tangible and part of our lives, the issue provides some potential good campaign fodder.
How many light bulbs do you buy in a year, what types? It is surprisingly few for most of us. So figure it out, then multiply that by your life expectancy ... then buy the bulbs and put them in the attic ... that’s what I did. “In my lifetime” ... there will be no light bulb ban ... and I’ll always have a choice ... go to the store or go to the attic.
We have been stocking up on bulbs. We placed the new Democrat bulbs in 2 lamps and it was a strange glow and difficult to see. Like the man said, the lighting was like a back stairwell in an old soviet apartment building.
Not at $50. Not at $25. Not at...
We don’t use a lot of bulbs, and I don’t mind using 50- or 75-watt for most purposes. There are just a couple of lamps where I want 100-watt, so I can see for embroidery.
Might not hurt to store some candles, too. They are killing our industries and our lives with these regulations.
I truly do not understand all the fuss about incandescence bulbs.....the new Cree LED’s have been out for sometime. Best flashlight I have ever owned cost me $24, runs off 3 double A’s, lasts 40 hours and will throw a blinding beam 1/4 mile. One Cree LED.
