White House contender Huntsman: Listen to climate scientists By Ben Geman - 05/17/11 05:59 AM ET
GOP White House hopeful Jon Huntsman is sticking by his view that climate change is under way, even while reversing his past embrace of cap-and-trade.
Time magazine has posted excerpts from interviews with the former Utah governor who recently left his job as President Obamas ambassador to China conducted for a recent profile.
Asked about his views on climate change, Huntsman replied:
This is an issue that ought to be answered by the scientific community; Im not a meteorologist. All I know is 90 percent of the scientists say climate change is occurring. If 90 percent of the oncological community said something was causing cancer wed listen to them. I respect science and the professionals behind the science so I tend to think its better left to the science community though we can debate what that means for the energy and transportation sectors.
The consensus view among climate scientists is that Earth is warming and human-generated emissions from burning coal and oil and other activities are a major cause.
Huntsman embraced cap-and-trade when he was governor of Utah, signing on in 2007 to a program among Western states and Canadian provinces called the Western Climate Initiative aimed at cutting regional greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020.
The initiatives policies include a regional cap-and-trade system that is supposed to launch in 2012. But its reach is shrinking.
Arizona has abandoned participation in the cap-and-trade plan, and its under fire in other states with GOP governors, including New Mexico, where a business task force created by Gov. Susana Martinez (R) recommended last month that the state also downgrade its role to observer status.
Huntsman, for his part, is declaring the program a failure before its formal launch.
Cap-and-trade ideas arent working; it hasnt worked, and our economys in a different place than five years ago. Much of this discussion happened before the bottom fell out of the economy, and until it comes back, this isnt the moment, he said, according to Time.
Another GOP White House hopeful former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has reversed his decision to embrace cap-and-trade when he was in office.
Hey Huntsman ... We HAVE listed, both to what they said to us; as well as what they said to each other. The intersting part is what they say to each other in private; totally undermines what they have been saying in public.
“And another one’s gone, another one bites the dust...yeah”
So does this mean Huntsman thinks we should just wait for the economy to recover before bringing out the snake oil prescriptions offered by the trendy greenhouse gas crowd again?
Who does he consider "climate scientists"? The self-appointed crowd with a political agenda who are to science what Al Qaida is to Freedom of Religion?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Huntsman is one of 3 “niche chasers.” Huckabee is gone. Newt imploded, so now Huntsman is trying to grab the niche of “reasonable moderate Republicans” and hoping the conservatives will split the vote and he’ll pull a McCain.
Detestable.
I wonder when conservatives will notice...
“White House contender Huntsman: Listen to climate scientists”
Apparantly RINO’s travel in groups. How is this man a “contender” in anyone’s eyes but his own and the MSM’s? Is there a Mormon politician that is NOT a socialist/leftist/RINO? BECAUSE of idiots like Romney and Huntsman and whose that dick in the senate...? I am questioning Mike Lee’s conservatism, TEA party or no.
No kidding. He’s a nonstarter and doesn’t even know it.
Climate change may well be under way, but it isn't global warming. Here in Orange County, California, my calendar reads May 17, yet we are having a winter storm.
Is Huntsman aware that the Earth’s climate has been changing for billions of years?
This may be the best we can do.....
The EPA head couldn’t tell you what the CO2 content of the atmosphere is. She refused to even answer the question.
Then the followup would be “how much of that is due to human activity including burning of fossil fuels”.
Then follow that up with “and how much of the total greenhouse effect would that amount to?”
(the answer to this last question is 0.117%)
he doesn’t know .....
there are 30,000 climate scientists, 9, 000 of which with phd’s, that disbelieve.
Who?
... is sticking by his view that climate change is under way
Oh, another idiot RINO. Why didn't you say so? F.O. Huntsman.
Jon Huntsmans Love Letters (to Obama & the Clintons)
Yes, Mr. Huntsman, the climate is changing, as it always has and as it always will. At this point, there isn’t enough data to tell where it is going and if we can do anything about it. The chief idea I have heard is that man is heating up the earth and that cutting CO2 emissions will do something about this. If you look beyond the surface and the hysterical, exaggerated reports in the MSM, you will see that this is at best unproven and possibly fraudulent nonsense. The more likely future scenario is another ice age. Best to do more science, especially trying to get a better handle on what the climate is actually doing, instead of relying on computer projections based on far too many assumptions and poor base data.
What I don’t want to see is the implementation of some grand palliative scheme that actually triggers an ice age.
Who says he’s a contender? Besides democrats and Big Media?
Glenn Beck?
Really? Beck supports this guy? That’s too bad.
He’s correct. Climate change is underway.
The political climate for RINOS is becoming more hostile by the hour.
