SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Navy is considering naming a cargo ship that's being built after farmworker activist Cesar Chavez.
James Gill, a spokesman for General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, said Monday the company suggested the name to honor its mostly Hispanic work force and the mostly Hispanic neighborhood, Barrio Logan, where the boat builder is located.

It is about time that a US Navy name a ship after Lakota chiefs Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse.
agree re Roy Benevides
On February 24, 1981, President Ronald Reagan presented Roy Benavidez the Medal of Honor. Reagan reportedly turned to the press and said: “If the story of his heroism were a movie script, you would not believe it”. He then read the official award citation.

that's a riot! the sad thing is, his followers wouldn't be bothered by it...
God Bless them all. That is an awesome idea. Thank you !
Thanks for the reminder.
I had seen this news story awhile back, but could not remember the details.
Cesar Chavez was against illegal immigration.
That’s a fact, Jack.
We should honor Chavez by fighting illegal immigration.
I lived just south of Fresno at the time, and you are right.
However, he did not like illegals. He was a union man.
“We should honor Chavez by fighting illegal immigration.”
Yep...and we should likewise honor him by not naming a ship after him because of his union ties.
We have the stick it too ya president!
Every action Obama has taken is to poke our eye out with a stick!
Why can’t people see that
He never suffered nor did his family tree suffer in America!
Yet for some reason he feels he has a legit claim.
From the beganning of time there has been Black on Black crime starting in africa when Blacks sold Blacks into slavery!
Is he a Berber aka Barbary?

Introduction The History of Slavery
Contrary to conventional thought, Slavery was NOT only endured by Blacks, all peoples have at one time or another been enslaved.
The irony is that it is Blacks who appear to have created the institution of Slavery.
As the creators of civilization, and the builders of the worlds first cities, Blacks logically were the first to have a need for slaves, as a source of free labor.
Slavery in ancient cultures was known to occur in civilizations as old as Sumer, and it was found in every civilization, including Ancient Egypt, the Akkadian Empire, Assyria, Ancient Greece, Rome and parts of its empire.

Years ago when Placido Domingo did the movie version of Otello in it was a possitive reflection on the Berbers even in those days we were being PC Scamed.

When did Jame Gill of General Dynamics represent our Navy?
“James Gill, a spokesman for General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, said Monday the company suggested the name to honor its mostly Hispanic work force and the mostly Hispanic neighborhood, Barrio Logan, where the boat builder is located.”
This decision shows the direction the Navy is heading. Naming a ship after Cesar Chavez goes right along with other recent decisions by the Navy that appear to be more about making a political statement than upholding the Navys history and tradition. If this decision were about recognizing the Hispanic communitys contribution to our nation, many other names come to mind, including Marine Corps Sergeant Rafael Peralta, who was nominated for the Medal of Honor for action in Iraq. Peralta is one of many Hispanic war heroessome of whom are worthy of the same recognition.
And we cannot forget about John Finn, a lifelong San Diego resident who won the Medal of Honor for what he did during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Finn is another worthy candidate that was evidently overlooked in the selection process.
This isn’t about anything he did in the Navy for those two years.
You are right, KA...he was a very strong opponent of illegal immigration. He was, also, very pro-Union, as you stated.
I lived in The Big Valley at the time he was in the news.
However, I don’t think any ship should be named after anyone other than those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great country.
It makes me sad to see the Navy being so PC...but they’ve been that way since my husband resigned his commission in 1976.
How Chavez was chosen is beyond my limited comprehension. Obviously, Politics trumps Honor in today's Military.
Agreed. I have seen some posts here that identified Sailors and Marines of HISPANIC Origin who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice for our Country.
How Chavez was chosen is beyond my limited comprehension. Obviously, Politics trumps Honor with THE CIVILIAN LEADERSHIP (OBAMA AND FRIENDS) WHO OVERSEE TODAY'S MILITARY.
Thanks...
The later it gets, the dumber I sound. Just ask anyone here. LOL
Good night.
NO, NO, NO...abso-freakin-lutely NOT!!! That would only serve to make us, AND our military, look more complacent, and accepting...are there no more American heroes that actually DID something to earn respect and honor??
