SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Navy is considering naming a cargo ship that's being built after farmworker activist Cesar Chavez.
James Gill, a spokesman for General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, said Monday the company suggested the name to honor its mostly Hispanic work force and the mostly Hispanic neighborhood, Barrio Logan, where the boat builder is located.

Hugo would be so proud!
WTF!!!?
If I was in the US Navy I would rather sail on the USS Edward James Olmos......
If it’s a garbage scow or target ship...ok. Otherwise...no way!
Sounds like ol cesar was just another community organizer.
If they wanted to name a ship after a real hero, I would suggest Roy Benevides. Although not Navy, he was a real hoss. No foolin. Look it up. Medal of honor award for rescuing a bunch of his buds while being shot up in the process. Not a peacock with a spanish surname.
"I thought you'd never ask"
Nah, it’s a wonder they don’t name something “Hugo Chavez”.
>>Can anyone actually name one accomplishment of Caesar Chavez?<<
He introduced the American citizen to the term, “Wetback” while protesting outside a grocery store in Los Angeles which was being filmed for the local TV evening news.
It's not our Navy; we won't allowed it.
i don't think so...
but i still think it's a dumb idea to name a ship after him... he was a farmers' union leader... the guy who stood up for the grape pickers...
Coming from a family of mostly Navy volunteers, I almost became Navy -- during Vietnam (if the recruiter had been less aggressive I'd have signed up).
If the Navy is even considering this move, I can say am glad I am not Navy and offer my condolences to those who are; along with my heartfelt respects and salutes) to those who are/were. Clearly Navy would not have been the right service for me.
State of California fourth grade curriculum regarding Caesar Chavez’s Navy service
In 1944, César joined the United States Navy and served overseas for two years. While in the Navy he witnessed that other people suffered the pain of prejudice because they spoke different languages or were of different heritages. When he returned from the Navy he went returned to Delano to help his family work in the fields.
Thats real sad
Garbage Scow?
