Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

Gregory asked Gingrich if he would criticize GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney, whose "Romneycare" health program enacted during his time as Governor in Massachusetts mandated that all uninsured purchase health insurance.
Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare.
"I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay--help pay for health care," Gingrich said, adding, "I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ..."

As of right now, no one.
I stand corrected regarding RuPaul. My other critiques stand. You backed a guy in 2010 who compared the border fence to the Berlin Wall. You don’t get purity in political candidates. If you can get 80 percent you’re having a very good day.
I agree completely. Republicans do best when in the complete minority and can win just opposing bills.
A real Republican candidate would be working with House Republicans to propose and SELL bills that put Obama on the defensive, and split him from his base. No, the Ryan plan does the opposite, even he is running from it now. Republican candidates that repudiate 'house' (conservative) proposals are just the same old. They will just propose more spending.
Newt is insane and is committing public sepuku.
Can we move on now and not post anymore newt stories?
I saw another FReeper who said they thought he was better than this. When he "announced" on Hannity he sounded tough as nails, but after this he can go away.
I'll stick with Trump till they run an actual conservative.
Romney is a lib, Pawlenty is a lib, I like Cain he is an unknown though an I don't see him gaining anytime soon, Ron Paul - legalization??? = death to the nation.
And for the PAULestinians please watch 24 hours of the TV show "Intervention" and tell me if you can still support Mr. Legalization Ron Paul...
To take broad liberties with Winston Churchill’s quote...
When it comes to the Republican party, “Never have so many owed so little to a party with so much to work with.”
You’ve got a traitor at the helm, and you can’t find the gumption to appeal to your base enough to take him down? What the hell is going on here?
For years people have been saying the Republican party might just as well be a wing of the Democrat party, and low and behold the Republican presidential contenders for 2012 are proving them right.
Absolutely disgusting!
If anything, the Republican party seems convinced it must move even further Left to gain appeal. I’ve never been so disgusted with the Republican party. If they can’t pull their heads out enough to get their act together under a guy like this, of what use are they to us?
As Ronald Reagan said in reference to the Democrat party, “I didn’t leave it. It left me.”
As for the Republican party and me, ditto to the X.
When McCain picked Palin for VP, we were thrilled to have at least one good candidate on our ticket. But in hindsight, it's a shame that he offered her the position. When he offered it, she had to accept - and when she accepted, she had to support John McCain.
Had she not been tapped for VP, she could have stayed in the governorship of Alaska, and retained her high approval rating there. From there, she could have hit Iowa in 2011 like a thunderbolt from the blue.
What is keeping you from supporting Bachmann?
It all makes sense once you realize the GOP leadership would rather see Zero reelected than have one of us horrible conservatives win.
I believe that to be true, and have for some time.
Good one. Next time find a horse with a 15 on his blanket. ;^)
Newt just ended his run for the White House on the Republican ticket.
A bit young for senile dementia, but Newt made it happen ;-)
15 for May 15? !5 years ago?
Way to go there Newt.
Keep going.
And going
Gone.
Good.
Good point. There is nobody worth a damn running right now. It is like they were hand picked by Obama’s inner circle.
The picture with Newt and Pelosi on ads for Global warming is always fitting if I only knew how to post it.
So you’re thinking he would go 3rd party?
(Just D@mn, that Pelosi dame must've really been smokin' HAWT on that couch they shared.)
Cheers!
