Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

Gingrich always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. That’s one of his larger faults,
Pick one. Then you can yell at me.
Re #60:
You know I wasn’t going to vote for him either, not because he’s a “RINO” but because I believed he has too much personal baggage to run an effective campaign. Now the dumb ass goes off and stakes out a position on the most controversial and opposed part of Obama’s platform that is to the left of EVERY major potential GOP candidate. Hell even Romney at least claims to oppose the federal plan.
I was willing to defend Gingrich to a great extent even though I would not vote for him in the primaries. Now he’s made any defense of him impossible even for centrist Republicans.
If Newt thinks the commerce clause covers forcing people to buy anything: bubble gum, NutriSystem meals, DVD’s of Michael Moore movies, or health care, he has lost his mind.
No way.
We nominate a conservative, or I vote for nobody or write in my own candidate (unless the Tea Party fields a conservative if necessary) in 2012, and I suspect there are many, many more in America who will have the same mindset.
Winning at any cost is not the solution.
Not going to happen, far too many liberal "feelers" out there. County hospitals and their staffs are required by law to attend to those who seek help. What would you do with the "homeless " person who slips and breaks a leg??? Because health care is not a right, no doctor, except one paid by the government, can be required to treat you. In an emergency, tornado etc, they all come forward and give treatment where necessary.....however, routine health care should remain up to the individual.
Gosh, that was a short campaign! Adios, Newted!
“I want to see the debates. Dont let everything here detract you.”
Newt has always been able to talk the talk. Walking is what gives him problems.
Who was that again? I’ll make it easier for you......... any favorites?
What’s the problem, you don’t actually recognize any of the conservatives who are poised to run?
I would like for you to justify that statement.
I want to know who you support. I kinda simple really.
Newt may not be backing “obamacare”but he’s definitely in favor of forcing everyone to buy insurance or post a bond, and for the govt(taxpayers)to subsidize the whole mess.
Unfortunately, egomaniacs like newt don’t go away.
You forgot Paul.
No denying Newt has problems. But that won’t be a showstopper for a lot of voters out there.
let's see...during the Carter administration, the Democrats and the MSM chose that total loser reagan as their opponent...he didn't do too badly as I recall...I believe that Daniels, with a lot of campaigning of course, could win a landslide over Obama. His record in Indiana is formidable!!!
There are currently 3 who I think are conservative enough to change the course of self destruction this country is taking.
I'm curious to know if you can identify those 3 conservatives.
