Gingrich Backs Obamacare's Individual Mandate
Newsmax ^ | May 15, 2011 | Newsmax Wires

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance – a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

What the heck does that have to do with gingrich being a rino jerk? A compromised and deranged rino jerk at that.

When a nominal Republican/conservative candidate says that he supports the individual mandate of Obamacare, what could he possibly say in the debate that would make him palatable to conservatives?

Newt has become the second coming of John McCain -- championing clearly unconstitutional measures in order to enhance government.

Newt does not support Obamacare. I need proof on that.

No Newt! In another thread, I said I would not even go to the polls if Mitt were the Republican nominee. Because there is no difference between Mitt and Obama, when you get right down to what they stand for.

If Newt is the nominee, I will vote for and donate to Obama. Newt is a worse totalitarian and a much more effective administrator than Obama. He can accomplish things that Obama could only dream of.

So, that’s what? Three? Four days? And, Newt has effectively ended his latest campaign for the WH.
The most clearly unconstitutional component of Obamacare, and he’s supportive?

Can he spell RINO?

It’s time to take back the nation. Dumping Newt would be a good start.

That Globull Warming Duet he sang on the couch with Nancy was an act of Severe Mental Derangement the likes of which one doesn’t just recover from. Once you’ve become that mentally deranged, you stay mentally deranged.

No surprise that he supports Obamacare (and yes, that’s what this mandate crap means).

The shortest campaign in history.

The shortest campaign in history. Seventy two hours from blastoff to splutter-crash.

(Not that it was ever going anywhere. It’s actually merciful of him to end it now, as he has done.)

There are decent people who can’t get insurance despite having the ability and desire to pay for the insurance. What would you have them do?

Well, that was fast. I thought Newtie would at least get through the First round of Jeopardy before pouring gasoline on himself and lighting a bonfire. “I’ll take Sucking Up To Obamacare for $1,000, Alex” was not the smartest choice.
LOL!

I won’t do it. He slammed Clinton pretty hard. Tell me who is taking out the Asshat Rambo Navy Seal in Chief?

I agree that the Clinton and media attack on Newt in 95 changed him. He was never the same after that. That’s not to excuse what he is doing now, but I think you’re absolutely accurate in your theory.

I even built that into an analysis of NY 23 and Newt and Reagan and Palin in one of my best ever show preps. It made for a whopper show segment.

My main problem with this is the MSM considers him a viable candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, and this kind of language undermines what the Congressional Republicans like Michele Bachmann are trying to do to defund and deconstruct ObamaCare.

This is not helpful, and he needs to STFU!!!!!!

Republicans are trying to overturn the law while Newt wants to "tweak" it.

What we need is more choices in insurance. A 22 YO healthy male does not need maternity coverage; probably a high deductible catastrophic/major medical would work for such a person. But it is not available in one-size-fits-all Obamacare.... I don’t know what Newt has in mind.

"I wonder what happened to him that turned him into a commie... "

Just because he supports the largest socialistic power grab in the history of the federal government does not make him a commie!

You create a good argument and I will pass it on. Michelle Bachmann could use a guide. Obama has 1 billion bucks to make sure he is elected. A fracture of the base will be hard to overcome. We must have someone.

If it takes a RINO to oust Obama, what is the point of an election? Our freedoms are disappearing at an alarming rate, yet you seem to advocate a RINO who will only slow the slide towards full marxism in the U.S. when what we really need is a politician who is willing to adjust the course of this country 180 degrees.

Putting a RINO in will only continue to display to those who do not follow politics closely, and mind you that is probably 80-90% of the public, that it really doesn't matter who is in the White House so they may as well vote for their favorite “team” or a “novelty” candidate, which is another reason we have Obama in the White House at this time.

Let the dems continue to run this country into the ground if necessary so that the majority of voters will wake up and understand who and what are truly ruining this country. Some are starting to pay attention, but it isn't yet enough to actually get past the clueless and the parasites.

I think DOA would be a more appropriate acronym for Newt's chances given his support for Obama's individual mandate and the way he totally capitulated to Pelosi's greenie crap.

Go away, Newt. You're long past your use-by date. You're rancid.

What we NEED is a law that says if you don’t have insurance and cannot otherwise pay, no healthcare provider (doctor, hospital, etc.) is obligated to treat you.

While I think I understand where this is coming from, it presents some problems for me depending on what you mean with the phrase "and cannot otherwise pay".

Take the hypothetical situation of an automobile wreck.  One of the passengers, a 3-year old child, is critically injured and is taken to the hospital emergency room for trauma treatment.  I don't like the thought of the medical personnel delaying life-saving treatment arguing whether the patient can pay for the treatment.

Now, after the child's life has been saved the question comes up as to who should pay for the treatment.  In this hypothetical case, the parent says he was recently laid off from the plant and has no insurance at the moment.  He nevertheless should be held liable for the cost of treatment, even if it means he pays $25 per month for 10 years...and more if/when he secures gainful employment again.  In other words, he should pay what he can pay, even if it is a "token" amount.
