Secrets: Good news of bin Laden's death may be followed by bad news of Pakistan giving China a peek at our downed helicopter. Will we be threatened by our own technology?
They are something out of the latest Batman flick, the modified Black Hawk helicopters that were used in the raid on Osama bin Laden's Pakistani compound. With a curious hublike housing around the unusually configured rear-rotor, among other things, it was clearly designed to be as quiet and stealthy as possible.
When one of the copters clipped a wall in bin Laden's compound, it had to be destroyed, leaving behind a technological gift that not-always-cooperative and now-disgruntled Pakistanis may use to get even with an America that left them out of the loop.
ABC News reports that in the days after the raid, the tail section and other pieces of debris including a mysterious cloth-like covering that the local children found fun to play with were photographed being hauled away from the crash site by tractor.
Pakistan has expressed an interest in keeping and studying the wreckage that we want back, but they do not have the capability to exploit any knowledge gained. The Chinese do, however, and they too have expressed an interest in taking a peek at the wreckage. And as one Pakistani official told ABC, "We might let them take a look."
After concluding a trip to Beijing last month, Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif told Pakistan's local press that China was Pakistan's "best friend." In some Pakistani eyes, sharing recovered stealth technology with their best friends in Beijing would be sweet payback for the unannounced Abbottabad raid.

Should the SEALS just throw themselves under the bus before the zer0 does?
BOMB THEIR EMBASSY - like in 1999....
I imagine they would rather quit the Teams and retire from the Navy altogether, rather than take the fall for our Communist president.
Meanwhile, we'll keep giving those Pak rats foriegn aid.
They destroyed part of the chopper up. Hopefully it was the critical part
“I don’t understand why that was left behind...”
I’m guessing it was orders. They had the ability to wipe it off the face of the earth. Call it tin foil hat material, but that wasn’t left behind by accident.
“Hey, who blew up the top secret tail rotor silencer?”
“Gee, I thought YOU did!”
Puhhhhllllleaaaaaase.
Obama could get the copter back if he really leaned on Pakistan, the way Bush leaned on Pakistan after 9/11.
But of course he won’t.
a) Because he’s a feeble wimp.
b) Because he wants China to get the technology.
It's my understanding that piece of tail section fell on the opposite side of the compound wall than the Seals were on. It's my guess that in the fog of the operation that got forgotten. I think what should happen is we (U.S.) should inform the Pakistanis that if we don't get the chopper remains back in 24 hours we're going to send a predator missile in to destroy the remains. And, btw, there can forget about any future aide from us. That’ what I would do. I think they're forgetting that there have been times in the past that the only thing restraining India from winding their clock is us as in U.S.
“Forgotten?”
China probaly had the plans before the first prototype was built. Affirmative action and all ya know.
Forgotten?
Heh heh ... yeah, and it was on the other side of a wall, too! Impossible to retrieve! How would they get through a wall?
An earlier piece of news said it was a Chinook. ...didn’t say Black Hawk. As for the Chinese, our universities and corporations already favored them over our own as university engineering students long ago, so game over. Prepare to rebuild instead of trying to undo what has already been done.
China hasn’t come up with anything new in 1,000 years. Since then it has practiced reverse engineering with a passion.
Shades of the Jimmy Carter fiasco.
The first stories were a Chinook and two Blackhawks. Which would have eliminated the whole surprise raid angle. These stealth birds are MUCH quieter.

“Call it tin foil hat material, but that wasnt left behind by accident.”
You mean like a nice ‘gift’ or ‘campaign donation payback’ from 0bama to China?
White Hut story #37 of this fiasco says that they had been planning the raid for two years. You would think that every scenario would have been covered. Maybe you’re right!
I’d bet my next Soc Sec check that the Chinese had cell phone pics and digital files on this rig before it was taxi’d out of the build hangar.
Ping
“Forgotten?”
Just my best guess. What’s yours?
