A new computational study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals how hydrocarbons may be formed from methane in deep Earth at extreme pressures and temperatures.
The thermodynamic and kinetic properties of hydrocarbons at high pressures and temperatures are important for understanding carbon reservoirs and fluxes in Earth.
The work provides a basis for understanding experiments that demonstrated polymerization of methane to form high hydrocarbons and earlier methane forming reactions under pressure.
Hydrocarbons (molecules composed of the elements hydrogen and carbon) are the main building block of crude oil and natural gas. Hydrocarbons contribute to the global carbon cycle (one of the most important cycles of the Earth that allows for carbon to be recycled and reused throughout the biosphere and all of its organisms).

you need to get out and read some more, The russians have been saying for years and with great success, that OIL IS ABIOTIC and A Renewable Energy created by Compressed Minerals in the earths crust, It has absolutely Zilch to do with ALGAE, or FOSSILS.
What? Williston Basin: over 15000 ft. of sedimentary rock. Anadarko Basin: even more. That's just two instances. There's plenty of time, because it has happened.
I have read quite a bit on the subject as it is my job to find the stuff. It ain’t coming out of the mantle. 99% of all hydrocarbons can be typed back to source beds through geochemistry. Show me one oil or gas field that is not in a sedimentary basin. Zip, zilch, notta. Sounds like the Russians have to fight for grant money at the universities the same way the global warming crowd does in America. Elementary thermodynamics would tell you that at the pressures and temperatures that they are talking about, all that would be stable is elemental carbon. But if you want to round up some investors and drill a hole into the mantle, go right ahead. You will have to find a metallurgist to come up with something to use as a drill string as everything in use to date would melt before you got to the pot of black gold.
Unbelievable that this point has to be stated.
It's like so many people have no clue of the scale of things, like there's some bottomless supply if we just put more straws in the ground. It's sorta like libs when they think they can just tax and tax and tax without end.
You might be interested in checking out the Zion Oil and Gas Company (ZN on the stock market, Zion.com on the internet). They are drilling in northern Israel on the basis of abiotic theory. So far, not much success, but they are optimistic. (Full disclosure: I’m a stockholder.)
Re: Oil Shale
Thanks for your very interesting note.
I knew I should have researched that before commenting.
I assumed the organic material descended to the shale at the same time the shale was ascending back to the surface
The freshwater lake is a total surprise.
I recall that several times in geologic history salt water oceans have pushed all the way to the Rockies.
Is there also oil shale in the Burgess Shale deposits in the Canadian Rockies?
The Burgess is a much older shale. It was deposited under the same anoxic conditions, thus it has the black color instead of being gray. The problem with it as being a source rock for petroleum is that the organisms that form it aren’t the ones that upon burial, are converted to kerogen. The Burgess is known for its preservation of beautiful species of early life, specifically trilobites, which look like large doodlebugs. If I remember correctly, the proper algae that is the key component for kerogen hadn’t evolved yet. The only organism around then that is documented to be potential source material is called a graptolite.

Pinging you to a new thread...
Here is the thread I linked to in the thread from today regarding theories of the origins on fossil fuel. This actually hit on Google when I searched. There is a wealth of info and links and discussion and debate.
You mean an old thread.
This crap isn't new. Wishful thinking keeps it alive.
Biotic oil powers the world. Those that understand that successful find and produce petroleum around the world.
Abotic oil powers the con men and those that live off the success of others. It produces no oil but cash for studies from the naive, investors and occasionally governments.
