ATLANTA (AP) --- Newt Gingrich, the House speaker who led a national GOP resurgence in the 1990s before facing ethics questions and resigning, is running for president.
Gingrich's announcement, made on social networking websites Monday, came after months of public flirting with a bid. He enters a slow-to-form GOP presidential field that has left some Republicans craving more options as they search for a nominee strong enough to credibly challenge President Barack Obama.
The former Georgia congressman, well-known to most Republicans, brings to the race a years-in-the-making political machine with ties to early nominating states as well as a network of supporters and donors. But his personal baggage --- he's acknowledged marital infidelity and has had two divorces --- could hinder his chances of winning the party's presidential nomination more than a decade after leaving the House.
Still, he spoke confidently of wide support.

Not so in many states. In open-primary states, it's the DemocRATs who nominate the Republican candidates.
Who do I want to run? Nobody that will get nominated.
West and/or Cain would have as little chance as Newt. It is incredible how people desperately grasp as newbies with NO chance. It is almost like they are afraid to win.
Newt is fooling himself and full of himself but the article’s claim that he stepped down from the Speakership for “ethical questions” is bull. He had a personal conduct issue that he knew made him vulnerable in electioneering and leadership — that in no way was an “ethical” issue in the performance of his duties in Congress or to his district.
He is the new McCain, not the new Murrah or Pelosi.
Around the time when Slick was in deep doo doo with his Lewinsky Affair, lying under deposition to special prosecutor, etc., Gingrich got up in front of the public and avowed he'd hold that rascal accountable - politically, legislatively, ethically and morally. IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS - I heard him. Shortly there after, pudgy gets caught with his pants around his ankles and resigns.
I'm sick of him and this isn't the first time he's done a spouse wrong. He has the nerve now to spout this other woman's name every chance he gets ....."Callista this, Callista that...." I don't give a damn about him or her.
I closed by telling him to just go the hell away.
I would not vote for Newt but what part of Palin isn’t running don’t you get?
We are screwed. Cain or West is the only hope.
There you have his campaign - Free Cookies For All.
What about a non-spitting cobra?
Yeah, but how do you really feel about him?
While I would oppose Romney if he were any other religion. But believing the Book of Mormon certainly should not win him any support. It is on the level of the Koran.
“Oh great. Another recycled GOP candidate.”
Didn’t you hear? It’s HIS TURN!
Sarah has to limit the amount of time the Treason Media will have to destroy her. She is essentially campaigning already without announcing. Apparently her funds are sufficient to allow this eschewing of funds an official nominee could receive.
Let these boozos knock each other around and wear out their welcome.
He proposed to Calista while he was still married to Marianne. He proposed to Marianne while he was still married to Wife #1. Both times, the current wife had no clue that he had a successor wife on deck.
Poor character is poor character. He has major issues with discernment.
Well, I would MUCH rather listen to Willie than Newt.
You, madam, are correct.
Voters nominate the nominee not some nebulous “establishment” or other conspiracy. It was clear that McCain was going to be the nominee because the so-called Right torpedoed those who could have beat him.
This time around West, Cain, Bachmann supporters will probably be used to eliminate credible candidates.
The one term idea was discussed by the Founders at the constitutional convention and in the Federalist. They concluded that allowing re-election was actually less dangerous to the Union since the motivation to perform well in order to get re-elected would predominate.
See 273.
LOL - Me too! At least Willie is up-front and honest about his flaws.
