Free the Federal Lands for States to Develop
American Thinker ^ | May 8, 2011 | Samuel J. Mikolaski

When the United States was formed the Congress owned no lands. It is time to establish the right of land ownership for every state in the union.

Heavy handedness by the White House restricting drilling in the Gulf and Alaska, combined with the day-by-day rise in gasoline prices, have focused public attention as never before on the enervation of local economies by federal bureaucrats and the emasculation of the power of states to create opportunity for their citizens.

Add to that the attempt by the National Labor Relations Board to force Boeing to halt assembly of Boeing's Dreamliner in South Carolina and to transfer that 30% of production to union-controlled plants in Washington State. We have now reached the point where individual industries will be run by federal government bureaucrats. Jobs are being lost by the multiplied thousands. And the creation of jobs by even more multiplied thousands is being hindered.

The best and most comprehensive way economic initiative can be returned to the states has to do with control of the land within each state, which bears directly on oil and gas exploration and drilling. Recognition of the sovereign right of each state to control the use of lands within its borders would result in an incredible increase in exploration and drilling, the creation of jobs both within and alongside that activity, and would quickly reduce our dependence on OPEC and non-friendly sources of oil and gas. Just the declared intention to do so would by itself dramatically impact world oil prices.

Consider the tremendous economic activity and the attending prosperity that is now occurring in North Dakota (population less than 700,000). The key is that oil and gas drilling and related business development are under the mandate of North Dakota, not Washington, DC.

You and I seem to be on the same page today.

Liberate the West - sell western lands to Americans.

Massive parts of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Montana are still federally owned. The BLM managers act like feudal chiefs over them - no one uses the land unless they pay tribute.

A short flight over any of these states will convince you. A short chat with any BLM land manager will convince you even more - these guys need to be sent to a socialist hell hole where their "skills" are in demand.

Over 45% of California is Federally "owned" land too, and there is more and more blocking of access of these lands to the public.

Yes we are. This is one of my biggest gripes.

The federal owned lands in the Western states is pathetic. BLM and USFS has been on a tear for the last 40 or more years to make it as difficult for the public to use those lands as possible.

Enviro-nazis have been infiltrating both agencies for 20 to 25 years and have some people in high positions. The people out on the land enforcing laws have become nastier as the years pass and closures are happening at a faster pace.

I've hunted for many years in four different Western states but mainly Oregon and it's all been on BLM or USFS land and it's like a different world than it was 50 years ago.

The feds should be kicked out of every state. I would go along with them maintaining the National Parks but that's all.

That's what burns my rear more than anything. That land belongs to the public, not to the feds or these agencies. Boot 'em out!

I have an idea, why doesn't Washington just claim that 99% of the land in the United States is occupied by a rare animal or something and then regulate it federally so the states no longer have any control?

That way no matter what anybody does, it could be deemed a felony and all states rights could be taken away?

Just a thought...

As are you and I, Regulator. I would love to see a variation of the old Homestead Act, f’rinstance. The bureaucrats care for their control, nothing more.

The biggest reason that there was no federal income tax until the 1900’s, the government sold off the western lands. That produced revenue and made the land productive.

The same thing should happen today. It has the added effect of making big chunks of real estate taxable and productive.

For a long time, the government has been taking land and resources out of private hands, rendering it useless to the economy.

I say, “Start another land rush.”

Exactlly! The USFS and BLM are supposed to be stewards and caretakers of the land, not hostile land owners. We recently had a huge remote area declared a wilderness here meaning no more 4 wheel drive vehicles. The area is so remote and rugged, with no water, that even the greenie hikers say they can't go in there with just a backpack, a motor vehicle is needed for access. The enviros claimed that off-roaders were ruining the area, but that was a lie, they even posted false photos on their websites taken in another area 200 miles away claiming they were taken here. I have been all over that area and there was ZERO damage from the very few vehicles that traveled into the area.

Yep. This approach by the enviros and the two agencies of declaring more wilderness areas is the latest attack on our lands they’ve come up with and they’re succeeding.

This has to be stopped along with the closing of countless access roads. If it’s not it won’t be too many years before the majority of public lands will not be accessible except on foot. As you pointed out, that will mean much of it will not be accessible to anyone.

No they don't. The land was bought and paid for by the United States before those States existed.

I am for selling the land.
