The good news: It’s a heavy blow to the Trump boomlet. The bad news: … none that I can think of, really.
Actually, the bad news is that I lose a vein of easy content to blog. Help me, viral videos, you’re my only hope.
More crosstabs from WaPo. The “Honolulu/Hawaii” column is the big one, obviously:
This poll was conducted before Obama’s announcement of the Bin Laden killing, in case you’re inclined to attribute the huge bounce to goodwill rather than evidence. Needless to say, the key lines are the ones for Republicans and Conservative Republicans; in both groups, the number of Birthers was cut by more than half after the birth certificate revelation. (In fact, it was likely deeper than that. Birtherism had been spiking in the last few weeks since Trump mainstreamed the issue, so it was probably higher than the April 2010 numbers shown here.) I argued a few weeks ago that, contrary to big media’s received wisdom, Birthers aren’t a homogeneous group but rather a mix of hardcore and softcore believers, the latter of which were simply misinformed because they weren’t following the issue closely. These numbers bear that out. Which, for Chris Matthews, means … what? Republicans are racist, but maybe not quite as racist as he thought? What happens to the narrative?
Some people were hassling me in Headlines over this poll because I suggested yesterday in the post about the Bin Laden photos that evidence doesn’t convince skeptics anymore. Fair enough; at the very least, I should have qualified that by specifying that I meant skeptics with an agenda. But give the Birther issue time. I’ll be mighty keen to see if the numbers still look like this in six months — which, theoretically, they should — or if they start to creep back up as discontent with Obama’s policies rises and/or hardcore Birthers regroup and start challenging the long-form birth certificate. Trump had better hope so. Somehow, I don’t see the “trade war with China” platform carrying him to the nomination.
But his dad was never an American.
Here is a quote from "Inglis v. Trustees of Sailor's Snug Harbor" a Supreme Court Decision in 1830. (This is important because John Marshall was the Chief Justice and in agreement):
Nothing is better settled at the common law than the doctrine that the children, even of aliens, born in a country while the parents are resident there under the protection of the government and owing a temporary allegiance thereto, are subjects by birth
This is basic political manuvering. The president was able to use the birther issue to label a large segment of his oppenents as kooks and freaks. My guess is that he was going to wait for this issue to crest at the eve of the 2012 election and the reveal it, making the GOP look like a bunch of chumps and easily coasting to victory.
Trump turned up the heat on this issue to the point where nearly half the country believed that the president is not eligible. Trump probably wanted to ride that wave of doubt into the White House, and with polls showing him ahead of all the other GOP potentials, and even beating the president as well, he could have. At that point, the president had no choice but to reveal it.
“My gawd, man, that newer faked birth certificate is even more fake than the old faked birth certificate.”
Now, all of us, can have proof that we were born in Hawaii like lord obozo with the same doctor on the same day and time and at the same hospital:

Statutes by Congress (US Citizenship laws) Cannot override or redefine ANYTHING Stated by the US Constitution.
The point is moot. I have uncovered enough proof for my own satisfaction that Obama was born to an American Mother AND Father. He meets the stringent criteria as I understand it, and therefore he meets the far weaker criteria that you claim.
This is because they lump anyone with a question about the man or his eligibility into the “birther” catagory.
FReepers know that the real question is about Natural Born Citizen.
Time to stop all this silly talk about following the Constitution. On to RINO victory in ‘12!
Furthermore, as Mark Levin ably poined out to a birther who called into his show some time ago, even if they found "proof" that Obama is not a nbc, there is absolutely no mechanism or impetus to remove him from office. You would get absolutely few or no congressmen or senators to move the process. And there's no way to get 17 Dem senators to vote for impeachment. The nbc issue is a dud from the get-go.
Exactly right. If Trump the Clown has done anything positive, it may have been to get this stupid "birther" crap off the table so our candidates wouldn't have to waste time on a bunch of conspiracy theory idiocy.
In a way it worked out rather well. Trump makes a big deal about the whole long form birth certificate thing - and claims his investigators are finding amazing things! Hussein releases the long form and blows Trump's only real issue out the water. Trump ends up looking like a buffoon, and the "birther" conspiracy is blown to pieces.
The good news - the GOP had a debate last night and not one single moment was wasted on "birtherism" blather. So by highlighting the issue early on, Trump may have helped push Obama to release the long form BC way before he probably wanted to. I am certain Obama would have liked the issue to hang around long enough to disrupt the Republican primaries and make the GOP look crazy. So in a wierd way we have Trump to thank for killing the issue off before it hurt us too much.
Might not have been a big problem back in 1789 but today you just disqualified a huge chunk of the U.S. population for eligibility to the U.S. Presidency.’
SO WHAT? There is no RIGHT to become president only constitutional requirements. If you can't meet them, which yes, you have to be able to prove it, you are disqualified. The fact that your mother was on welfare and would lose it if the father was known and living in the home, is a consequence of your own actions. YOU have disqualified your own children. If you have indiscriminate sex with so many men that you don't even know who the father is, the kids are disqualified. If you are an illegal alien with anchor babies, they can't be natural born citizens. Out of luck!
That leaves the VAST majority of 35 year olds, still eligible to the office. Enough to choose from.
STANDARDS, REQUIREMENTS, LAWS, not everyone can qualify. GET IT?
Yeah, Obama's a real Genius, but only on THIS issue. On everything else he is a complete moron, but on THIS issue he's a super genius!
Do you really believe that?
So this impostor will not get removed. IT is a Constitutional issue and IF we are to maintain a Constitutional Republic, the Bill of Rights, we can't just go saying and agreeing with the liberal liars that it is a living breathing document. Let history record what exactly liberals think of the Constitution once and for all time.
“I still dont believe it. Just tired of dealing with the masses who refuse to admit the flaws in the finally-produced document.”
Me, too. I still believe everything that comes out of the White House originated in a lie and this is a lie that keeps being perpetuated by attempts to fool the people. Having said that...it has become impossible to win the battle of “where’s the birth certificate/”....I think the new battle cry needs to be “where’s the natural born?”
My point is that this country is populated with a majority of selfish, ignorant dolts. Secular Humanists in action and world-view. William Ayers’ job is done, and there is no going back.
They don't. Please read the citizenship laws (as I linked to earlier) and you will see.
The 14th amendment, if interpreted correctly requires that the parents of children owe no allegiance to any foreign state.
Except it makes no such statement. We have to go with what the amendment says. On top of that, the president's mother is a US citizen, and with him being born in Hawaii, there's simply no way to show under existing law that he is not a citizen by birth.
Ah, then you'll accept James Madison's understanding? He is known as the "Father of the Constitution," after all.
It is an established maxim that birth is a criterion of allegiance. Birth however derives its force sometimes from place and sometimes from parentage, but in general place is the most certain criterion; it is what applies in the United States; it will therefore be unnecessary to investigate any other.
I am tending to agree with your analysis, but I disagree with your characterizing people who work to be informed on this issue the way you have. The reason this issue was never settled is because the media never pursued it. Indeed, they did everything possible to cover it up and make it go away. Despite that, the drum beat continued until recently.
Had the Media been willing to pursue this, or had they been forced to pursue this, this could have done serious damage to him long ago.
Too much of what Americans are allowed to discuss is controlled by Liberal people who decide not to discuss things they don't like.
*That's Txe Birth Certificate?
Someone who can run on an openly socialist campaign platform and convice 52% of the people to vote for him is not an opponent you take lightly.
The Left misunderestimated Bush in 2004. Look where it got them in that election. Do we want to make the same mistake in 2012?
