US: Only single bin Laden defender shot at SEALs

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Americans who raided Osama bin Laden's lair met far less resistance than the Obama administration described in the aftermath. The commandos encountered gunshots from only one man, whom they quickly killed, before sweeping the house and shooting others, who were unarmed, a senior defense official said in the latest account.

In Thursday's revised telling, the Navy SEALs mounted a precision, floor-by-floor operation to find the al-Qaida leader and his protectors - but without the prolonged and intense firefight that officials had described for several days.

One more thing to add to the mix. They are trumpeting in the media how the raid uncovered a plot against our passenger railroads. Funny. The TSA was already groping children there earlier. They knew this intelligence previously. You may be correct. They took an intelligence asset out for an attempted political gain. There was absolutely no reason to go public with this, unless you were attempting to divert attention. Now I can go back to bed. Night all.

You're not wrong. The mistake was the rush to get this out Sunday night.

It could've waited until the morning. The operation was over, the body disposed of, nothing was breaking right then. They weren't even on time, letting the press wait almost an hour! So they'd have missed the Monday morning front pages, so what!

Now they've had to release innumerable versions of what happened. We've gone from OBL dying in a hail of bullets while using a woman as a shield to our armed forces murdering a house of unarmed men.

Big-mouth Biden told us it was the SEAL team, we know what ship Osama was dumped from too. We had dithering about the photo release where we're not "spiking the ball" but we sure are making campaign stops.

His first at Ground Zero as president and now he's taking the buffoon Biden to meet the SEAL team today in Kentucky! Why do we know this? At this rate we'll have Biden naming names and releasing sketches of the team.

This has been treated like a "local hero does good, gets key to city," event and not a secret military raid. Such a perspective almost makes sense from a community organizer.

Absolutely. First off, whatever intel was collected at the site could have been put to good use.

Per Reuters, they're already telling us about the intel collected: a domestic train attack was being considered for 9/11 this year.

This administration needs to learn when to shut-up before they get people—Americans or allies—killed.

This is what happens when you’re more interested in managing the news cycle than managing the war.

Remember in one of Bush’s early addresses following September 11th when he said this war would involve operations that would be “secret, even in success”?

I miss having an adult in the White House.

They just don't want to admit that they sat there watching unarmed people get shot.

They have to maintain that position, since although we are at war with the terrorists present in the building, from the point of view of local authorities in Pakistan a few people just got gunned down in a house in their city. That's a crime to be investigated from their point of view, as it would be in any country.

For the politicians, admitting that you were personally involved in it could lead to criminal prosecution by those local authorities in the future, which is one of the reasons that anonymity and secrecy is very important in this kind of operation.

We've already seen this kind of problem internationally with the attempted prosecution of General Pinochet from Chile in Spain and elsewhere. (And no, I'm not equating his actions at all with those of our government, just pointing out that some governments around the world have expansive views of their rights to bring criminal charges against political and military leaders of other countries.)

A true leader would have never revealed the operation until many years down the road

A brief announcement could have been made.

"Veni, Vedi, Vici".

Blunder or Evil Brilliance

We're being set up for that needed crisis event on American soil. I cannot accept this regime would be so ignorant as to release these kind of details. For all their talk about not offending muslim sensibility, it sure appears they are now doing everything they can to ignite the fuse.

The Tea Party didn't give them the crisis, the flu panic didn't, the unions couldn't get it elevated enough, the oil spill wasn't enough.

We have a team of SEALs make a 200 mile (or more trip) through hostile territory, into a sovereign nation that is also populated by people who hate us, they kill the most wanted man in the world and none of them get so much as a hangnail - and this White House is incapable of not screwing (although that's not the word I want to use) the freakin' press conference up - ALL FIVE TIMES.

At some point it becomes intentional. No?

"At some point it becomes intentional. No? "

Well, I think that's the reflexive reaction any American would have - kind of, "They can't be this incompetent, can they?" reaction.

Yes, I think that they can, and they are that incompetent. Neither Barack Obama or Joe Biden have 5-minutes of management experience between them, not in any area - private or public.

This kind of incompetence is probably not only believable, but is what should have been expected by at least 51% of the country two years ago. Unfortunately, it wasn't. This was supposed to be the "return to competence" administration, in the minds of 57% of the American voting public.

I believe we are up to version 1,236 mod 1.

There is so much bullshit poopie coming out of this joke of an administration over this bin Laden that we cannot possibly believe any of it. The Great Deceiver spin machine is working overtime.

As we used to say in the Army, Obama’s so full of shit poopie, his eyes are brown.

Happier now, hall monitor? And if you want to admonish me, do it privately.

Agreed. Throw in malignant borderline personalities with an incompetence that will redefine stupidity.

We knew where he was. We knew who he was.

You make interesting points. This is getting kind of weird, but it doesn't seem like there was a lot of security in the compound, enough to defend OBL. It sounds like they wanted to keep people in as much as keeping them out. Obama may have indeed killed an intelligence asset for his political campaign, but we can't know for sure without evidence. Something just isn't right about all of this
