Not content to tax your gasoline purchases, now the government wants to track exactly how far you drive - which, of course, implies tracking exactly where you drive.
The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.
....
Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations.
Oh yeah, that'll go over well.
You do realize, folks, that it's trivially easy to tamper with such a device unless it also stores tracks. That is, exactly where you drove, not just how far. And that tampering with such a device would be ridiculously profitable and, if tied to you via your fill-ups, would be effectively anonymous, which would make cheating impossible to prosecute.
Therefore, that couldn't be done. Therefore, the unit's identity would have to be tied to you, and the path you traveled would have to be stored and maintained in order to validate that you hadn't cheated.
The office would be required to consider four factors in field trials: the capability of states to enforce payment, the reliability of technology, administrative costs, and "user acceptance." The draft does not specify where field trials should begin.
User acceptance eh? Here's my answer:
Try reading "Brave New World". or "1984".
THEY OBVIOUSLY DO NOT GET IT!
FUBO! AND ALL THE HORSES YOU RODE IN ON!!
And yet this is not about taxes at all. That is false flag as one would say, for something way more devious.
There’s no way this is going to happen in this country. The libs are seriously deluding themselves if they think the American People, who are still predominantly conservative, will stand for this nonsense. In a way, I hope they try to get this implemented because it will definitely insure their defeat.
I would rather pay all my taxes to the state in which I live and let the state haggle it out with the Fed. At least I will have more say-so with my vote and have more control because it will be closer to home. The IRS needs to be aboloished. Get them out of our idividual incomes. Return power to the states.
That's what they said about banning alcohol.
If they think they can get away with it they will most certainly try.
These effing tyrants never sleep. They shall rue the day however.
I’ll NEVER comply with this!
Of course, I don’t earn $250,000, so I’m SURE it will never apply to me! :p
We've come THIS far in the last 80 years, why wouldn't they think it?
“Wake up everyone this is not about tax revenue. If if was then they would just raise the federal gas tax.”
Agree - much more than the gas tax. People on FR may go bonkers at the thought of raising the gas tax, but it is PROVEN that people will pay, basically, WHATEVER is demanded to drive. In the case of toll roads, that goes as high as 20 cents per mile. In the case of “managed” toll roads, like State Highway 91 in California, it’s up to $1.00 per mile at peak times.
So, how much is the federal gas tax...about 20 cents per gallon, or ONE CENT per mile. How much is needed for DOT to be SWIMMING in money - way more than they’ll need for years, about TWO CENTS per mile (40 cents per gallon). Given them 30 cents (i.e., 10 cents more), and they’ll be good for a few years.
How much does 20 cents per MILE cost if it were a gasoline tax - about $4.00 - TEN TIMES as much. So where does that other $3.60 per gallon go? Remember that health care bill last year...
Think about that, think very hard - and FIGHT LIKE HELL. We should concede a gas tax increase, 10 or 20 cents, just to keep up with inflation - but NEVER a mileage tax. If you guys keep fighting so hard on a small gas tax increase (and are successful) you WILL get this mileage tax - like it or not. I PROMISE THAT. You cannot have free roads...not going to happen.
On the tracking and surveillance end, I could go on for ever, but won’t bother.
Seems like a good way to hand the 2012 election to the Republicans.
“Theres no way this is going to happen in this country.”
It will be done as an emergency revenue measure, you will not even have a chance to oppose it.
But given this tracking and real-time pricing, versus European prices for gasoline - I’ll take Europe ANY DAY.
Communists King Obama and his Administration on the move again.
“Seems like a good way to hand the 2012 election to the Republicans.”
I have no doubt that a good number of Republicans will support this. Big business loves it because it ends traffic jams...by getting people to do their shopping at 3 AM.
“Your papers please!” Now tell me again, Why do you want to go to Walmart? You have relatives in Pomona? Jawhol! Heil!
What about the 1000 gallons of gas my weed-eater uses during the summer?
“Seems like a good way to hand the 2012 election to the Republicans.”
That won’t be any consolation to what this will do to you. Are you a tea party person. They will know your every move.
Words taken from a famous movie:
“The only winning move is not to play”.
Teamsters? Public buses? Taxi drivers? Limo services?

Okay, so you want to tax the miles I drive...
1. Great, no more gas tax
2. Tax every taxi, bus, train, airplane, and boat/ship for the miles they travel too, based on the seats available compared to vehicles (if a vehicle is charged a tax for four seats, multiply the tax per vehicle by the number of times four divides into their total seats
3. Tax every city for the miles their employees travel
4. Tax every non-profit for the miles their employees travel
5. Tax every leftist organization for the miles their workers travel
6. Tax every state and federal government official for the miles they drive
7. Tax all police departments for the miles driven
8. Tax all fire departments for the miles driven
9. Tax all Ambulance Services for the miles driven
10. Tax all short haul and long haul trucks
Bring it on Barack. We’ll see how this flies after a nationwide walkout.
I would ask only one thing. Please implement this sound tax policy on October 1, 2012.
In fact, I'm kind of surprised it's gotten so much attention because I don't see how it can be implemented very effectively in light of the technological requirements and the high cost of collecting revenue.
