PITTSBURGH -- Police have arrested two Maryland men accused of stealing elk antlers valued at more than $500,000 from a vendor at the National Rifle Association convention in Pittsburgh.
Police said the victim, a 56-year-old professional elk hunter from Idaho, contacted them Monday night to report that two sets of antlers were stolen from his booth at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center while he was waiting with his truck at a loading dock.
One set of antlers, which has a score of 522 inches, is appraised at $500,000, while the second, which has a score of 486 inches, is appraised at $15,000, police said.
Officers at the convention center detained two men who were seen walking with two sets of antlers, police said.
"We saw something suspicious, and that was a couple of guys taking some elk antlers or horns right out the front door," said convention center general manager Mark Leahy. "When they start carrying things to the end of the building, it's like they're not looking for the truck, something else is going on."

Mike
He was horny?
Guess the bad guys got the point...
If he had his antlers insured for $515,000, he probably cried.
how do i take that??
the $515K would go a lonnnng way
What a load of Elk crap! The May 2011 issue of American Hunter has an article about a man who deals in antlers. There is a large business in sheds and racks that are sold to be ground up into medicines, used to make rustic furniture, etc. He said that even trophy racks are worth about $6 a pound.
I also go to a high end auction 4 times a year and in the last one they had a complete formerly world record Elk. Not just the antlers, the entire mounted animal. It went for around $3000. If this guy managed to get a set of antlers insured for $500k he had the stupidest insurance broker on the planet.
“If this guy managed to get a set of antlers insured for $500k he had the stupidest insurance broker on the planet.”
Not so sure about that. Most insurance companies will gladly take premiums. If your willing to pay they will insure.
Wonder if the theives were NRA members or SEIU members?
I’d say the guy paying the premiums was the stupid one.
Not what you’d call the sharpest tools in the shed, were they?
515K for antlers?? That’s highway robbery. I’ve never paid over 400K.
“One set of antlers, which has a score of 522 inches”
Ok someone explain what “score” means....is it the combined lineal length? just guessing here.
At an NRA conference??? Can you imagine how many concealed handguns there were? Those perps were STUPID!!!!
The one on the left seems to have impressive antlers. Not sure what the one on the right has on her hat.
Looks like excellent racks there to me . . .
Total of length of main beam, circumference of base and between each tine, length of each tine, with deductions for differences...to give points for symetry...plus maximum spread.
He was one guard away from winning the lottery.
Thanks.
