One unwary phone call led US to bin Laden doorstep (tip from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed)

WASHINGTON – When one of Osama bin Laden's most trusted aides picked up the phone last year, he unknowingly led U.S. pursuers to the doorstep of his boss, the world's most wanted terrorist.

That phone call, recounted Monday by a U.S. official, ended a years-long search for bin Laden's personal courier, the key break in a worldwide manhunt. The courier, in turn, led U.S. intelligence to a walled compound in northeast Pakistan, where a team of Navy SEALs shot bin Laden to death.

The violent final minutes were the culmination of years of intelligence work. Inside the CIA team hunting bin Laden, it always was clear that bin Laden's vulnerability was his couriers. He was too smart to let al-Qaida foot soldiers, or even his senior commanders, know his hideout. But if he wanted to get his messages out, somebody had to carry them, someone bin Laden trusted with his life.

In a secret CIA prison in Eastern Europe years ago, al-Qaida's No. 3 leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, gave authorities the nicknames of several of bin Laden's couriers, four former U.S. intelligence officials said. Those names were among thousands of leads the CIA was pursuing.

I like the idea that bin laden had time to realize that he was going to die soon

Rumsfeld is claiming no harsh interrogation techniques were used. Like I said, they must have asked really really really nicely.

Enhanced interrogation in secret prisons work!

“Officials say CIA interrogators in secret overseas prisons developed the first strands of information that ultimately led to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Current and former U.S. officials say that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided the nom de guerre of one of bin Laden’s most trusted aides. The CIA got similar information from Mohammed’s successor, Abu Faraj al-Libi. Both were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics inside CIA prisons in Poland and Romania.

The news is sure to reignite debate over whether the now-closed interrogation and detention program was successful. Former president George W. Bush authorized the CIA to use the harshest interrogation tactics in U.S. history. President Barack Obama closed the prison system.

snip

People of good faith on both sides can disagree on the efficacy and morality of harsh tactics. I do hope, however, that we can dispense with one nonsensical anti-EIT talking point: That they don’t work. They do. Just ask Osama bin Laden.”

If you think the SEALs in the helos are bad asses who go way into danger, think about the CIA guys on the ground before, during and after. Like the dude who shot two robbers and spent a month in a paki prison. Real ballsy guys to operate in a part of the world where infidel beheadings are light television fare.

Okay, what is jumping out to me is that it was LAST YEAR that they found the courier. I don’t know if you heard about the latest from Ulster Man, but he sent something out today saying that the military wanted to strike months ago and Obama wouldn’t let it happen and he was made to have it happen this time.

Why is the AP admitting that Obama has known since last year? Are their cracks coming out against “the one”????

You have to give the WH team credit for one thing. If they had bombed the compound, the Pakis would be claiming it was a “baby milk factory” situation and Shirley Temple’s family had been killed along with the orphan puppies they had been raising.

Now the Pakis have no “Great Satan” story to pull out.

According to the article, while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded, the information about the courier was not obtained during one of those sessions.

The author of the article considers the debate about the effectiveness of waterboarding still undecided.

I, on the other hand, think there should be a waterboarding ride at Six Flags over Gitmo.
