Pakistan has some explaining to do. Why was Bin Laden living in a city with a huge military base?

Where has Osama bin Laden been for the last 10 years?

That is a question that most of us want answered because of where he was found; living comfortably in a huge mansion in a city with a large Pakistani military base and in an area where there were many retired Pakistani officers.

Abbotabad is about 80 miles from Islamabad and is hardly "remote." It is considered a suburb of the city and has a population of 80,000.

It is very possible that sometime in the last couple of years, bin Laden fled from the rugged Northwest Frontier Provinces because our drone strikes were hitting al-Qaeda leadership cadres with stunning regularity. In this, we were getting good cooperation from the Pakistani government and their intelligence service, the ISI.

But bin Laden's move into Abbotabad raises questions of his collusion with the Pakistani military and ISI. It is believed the ISI helped facilitate his escape from the box we had him in during the Tora Bora operation in 2002 so it is not a farfetched idea to contemplate the same kind of assistance given the terrorist when it became too dangerous for him to hang out in the tribal areas.

President Zardari of Pakistan is in a bind. He does not control the military as most presidents in other countries do. The military/intelligence apparatus is a separate power center in Pakistan and they possess the national security and foreign policy portfolios. It is clear that despite the White House trying to give Zardari a fig leaf by announcing Pakistani cooperation with the operation, the fact is, they were never privy to the details and didn't know when it was going down.

We are giving $7 billion in aid to these folks over the next 5 years. I think it would be nice if we discovered who, if anyone, in the Pakistani military establishment assisted the world's number one terrorist in hiding from American justice and if that cooperation with bin Laden goes all the way back to 9/11.

Just for comparison, 80K is roughly the same population as Boca Raton, FL - not a tiny city, at all, but not a huge city either. I doubt that there's very little that goes on in Boca that everyone doesn't know about in fairly short order, especially as it relates to who's living there. People talk.

It's just not believable that someone as ridiculously high-profile as bin Laden could live an a (by all accounts) massive and out of place gated compounded for five or six years, without MANY people knowing it.

If Pakistan officials knew he was there, they sure didn’t give him any warning that he was about to be taken out.

Because they weren’t told. The “cooperation” they’ve provided in the WOT was sorely lacking from day one.

Gee, Bin Laden sure was stupid to be hiding there,eh? Didn’t change his appearance, stayed put for months, lived in a huge mansion that stuck out like a sore thumb. Yup, that’s how I’d do it if I was the most wanted man in the world and had unlimited funds. Does this really pass the common sence test?

Billions. It should have never happened in the first place, but it should be ceased immediately. It won’t.

Makes one wonder if the CIA agent that was arrested by Paki, was really confirming OBL’s location. got ambushed by OBL guards?

What's to explain? A simple search of readily available information tells you everything you need to know. In 1984, Abdullah Azzam and Osama bin Laden founded the Al Qaeda precursor, Maktab al-Khidamat. Incidentally, Azzam was a Muslim Brotherhood member. Who's surprised?

Once the Soviets left Afghanistan, Pakistan saw an opportunity to expand their influence in the region. They worked with what would become the Taliban and Al Qaeda to achieve that goal. The Pakis have been hip-deep in this for decades.

In order to appreciate just how hard the US has been scammed by Pakistan, you have to look at this map of Osama´s luxury compound, located just next to the Pakistani version of West Point. It´s literally just down the block from Bin Laden. The city (Abbottabad) houses numerous Pakistani military installations. It´s now obvious that Pakistan was on the other side all along.

OK...I am going to point out the White Elephant in the room (not that someone else hasn't...maybe I just haven't seen it).

1st...I doubt seriously that BHO made this a top priority. What probably happened is that he stumbled bass-ackwards into some intel. He got lucky.

2nd....and now to my point...this guy was hiding in plain site. He's been there for YEARS. We have KNOWN he was in Pakistan for YEARS.

We did NOTHING. Bush did NOTHING. Obama did NOTHING. But...I expected him to do NOTHING. Bush...however...did NOTHING. Knowing now that he was hanging out in a mansion in the middle of a city. This is an EPIC intel failure.

The Bush admin was not hunting him like they should have been. They were not kicking over all the rocks...they were not leaning on POKISTON with all the weight of the US of A. If they had been....they would have puked him up like my cat barfs up a hairball.

Pakistani officials knew he was there. They didn't know he was about to be attacked and killed until it was too late.

+1 - makes much more sense why locals decided to “rob” a embassy employee/CIA agent who was taking photos in Pakistan.

How could you say Obama did nothing when it was under his administration that bin Ladin was killed?
