Details are emerging of how al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was found and killed at a fortified compound on the outskirts of Abbottabad in north-west Pakistan.
The compound is just "a stone's throw" and less than 200 yards from the Pakistan Military Academy, an elite military training centre, which is Pakistan's equivalent to Britain's Sandhurst, one local journalist from Abbottabad told the BBC.
Other reports have put the distance at 800 yards.
But the compound lies well within Abbottabad's military cantonment - it is likely the area would have had a constant and significant military presence and checkpoints.
The operation began at about 2230 (1730 GMT) and lasted about 45 minutes, military sources told BBC Urdu. Two or three helicopters were seen flying low over the area. Witnesses say it caused panic among local residents.
Barbed wire and cameras
The target of the operation was the compound, which had at its centre a large three-storey building.

And make sure sent of American money and weaponry too.
People swept up in moment, cheering like this is some VJ Day. The press are overselling this.
I've heard it compared to the JFK's assassination, I've heard it called the "greatest moment in 100 years" and more.
The best 'revenge' is to take little notice of his passing. I know what he's responsible for and people killed on 9/11. I'm not in a cheering mood.
All we need now is ANOTHER country to invade.
Barried at sea...I seriously hope not before some shaved a pork chop up with carcass and a wad a dog hair in his mouth.
thanks GW while you were a wishy washy social conversative you stood up to the islamomurderers.
This is a huge get. The Big Enchilada.
We are at war. We must win.
Don’t let the losers tell you this is not a great victory. It is. Giving up hope is what the terrorists want and don’t fall victim to loser mentality.
But..But, they got the name of OBL’s most trusted courier 5(FIVE) years ago. Dare I say did they get the info through ..gasp...WATERBOARDING?
Zero is trying to tell his Isalmofascist buddies that OBL was not a Muslim Leader, let’s see how they react to that news.
Oh BTW all you Gitmo Alum, WHICH ONE OF YOU SNITCHED.
All you “freedom” fighters in the Arab world, how do you know some gitmo alum leading you around by the nose isn’t the one that gave up the evidence?
Glad the jerk is dead. Zawahiri’s next.
Hopefully in the Bay of Pigs.
God bless our troops and the US Navy Seals that pulled this off.
Awesome !!
I did not say invade, I said “bomb”. The Pakistan Government needs to be punished promptly where it hurts. They have been playing us for fools for decades now and it appears the only way they will stop is if we send a message.
Got that book for Christmas, and have been meaning to pick it up.
It was, indeed, an especially awful speech, even for Osama Obama.
Pakistan has modern armaments provided by us and they have nukes. It is better that we stop selling them spare parts for their US made weaponry and prevent allies from doing so, also.
I won’t disagree there and we should have stopped giving them money years ago but they still must be punished.
IMHO...
Regarding the “cheering crowds” for nobama last night - the ones outside the WH were clearly set in motion by his young college activist crowd who are very uncharacteristically “pro-USA”. They all tweeted each other and quickly ran over to the WH with the media following like saps. Many other Americans then were drawn to this crowd and happily chant “USA”.
Given nobamas history of holding back our military (remember the merchant captain who was saved by the Navy), I would wager that they were doing everything they could to not let this one get away.
However, I’m sure the primary decision driver was the 2012 election and nobamas sinking numbers.
This caused nobama and his handlers to switch gears ideologically and give the go-head to the mission and set in motion their plans to make the most possible out of it for his reelection, mostly in this case reaching out to conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans, i.e., the political center in the U.S.
If this mission presented itself when nobama first took office he would simply have pre-advised pakistani intelligence and ordered a bombing instead, which would have let binladin escape.
To summarize my HO, it is only because of nobamas dire prospects for the upcoming election in 2012, only 18 months away, that he gave the order to kill binladink, and did not tip off, errr, coordinate with, the pakis. This was to ensure a successful mission for nobama.
The nobama reelection people will be kicking in into gear going all-out to build him up into a messianic figure for signing the order. We’ll see how much this bought him 2 or 3 months from now.
He will also have to handle the blowback from the mooslim world over the coming 18 months.
Unfortunately for all Americans, during the expected blowback period, at least the first 18 months of it, we’ll have him for a President.
I think the ultra-left who run the Democrat party are hoping that if he does not get reelected, the real inflation damage won’t hit until after he leaves office.
RussiaToday on May 2, 2011The U.S. President Barak Obama has confirmed that Osama Bin Laden has been killed in a special operation in Pakistan. For more on Bin Laden's demise and what it could mean for the world RT talks to Stephen Lendman, radio host and author.
