Details are emerging of how al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was found and killed at a fortified compound on the outskirts of Abbottabad in north-west Pakistan.
The compound is just "a stone's throw" and less than 200 yards from the Pakistan Military Academy, an elite military training centre, which is Pakistan's equivalent to Britain's Sandhurst, one local journalist from Abbottabad told the BBC.
Other reports have put the distance at 800 yards.
But the compound lies well within Abbottabad's military cantonment - it is likely the area would have had a constant and significant military presence and checkpoints.
The operation began at about 2230 (1730 GMT) and lasted about 45 minutes, military sources told BBC Urdu. Two or three helicopters were seen flying low over the area. Witnesses say it caused panic among local residents.
Barbed wire and cameras
The target of the operation was the compound, which had at its centre a large three-storey building.

So we shouldn’t have bothered killing Bin Laden?
When Obama came into office he immediately let Pakistan know that they were not off limits and he acted rather pissed off at them. He started early on running military operations in Pakistan.
I think Pakistan politically repelled Bush’s effort to kill Osama and harbored him and Bush knew it. With all the pressure Bush was under from the Left, he was weakened and could not take on the Paki government’s betrayal on top of everything else.
The Left and the Dem party and the Rinos were treasonously anti-US and pro-Muslim to the point where they curtailed and prolonged our war effort. They gave comfort and protection to the Pakis as they ran their pro terrorist policy. Things changed.
Now we will see what happens if the terrorists who have flooded over our wide open border, retaliate from their connections and protection through the Muslim Brotherhood and their mosques. Obama has positioned some of them in government positions and Dems have put them on staff in Congress. It reminds me of the Fort Hood shooter. They are inside and near to figures of power, abetted by political correctness.
We need a UBL urinal in NYC, DC, and PA.
The line will stretch for miles.
Frankly it’s not a gain. Would have used the find as an intelligence goldmine.
Ditto! The pakis were probably on his security team. Flatten the country to encourage the others. Then do the same to Iran & North Korea. You are right-idiot politicians & State Dept. people don’t know feces from shinola in dealing w/ terrorism or terrorist. They are great at BSing, though. If we severely punished Pakistan, for hiding & harboring Osama as we should, countries like Iran, Venezuela & North Korea would be pissing their pants.
Bomb holy hell out of ‘em & let India finish ‘em off. Have them annex the joint & call it “North Western Indiastan. The sooner we are rid of these Paki cockroaches the better!
Ahh...big birds make much noise and cause the winds to blow downward instead of cross ways. They spit out men from their bellies, with wicked stingers like those of a hornets nest.
//sarcasm off.
The ONLY reasonable, truthful comment I have read all morning.
Well, this morning I am a proud American.
If they dropped a dime on Ol’ Slimey Ben Rotten, do you think they would have lived long enough to spend any of the reward?
CNN reported he wrote it himself.
It wasn’t his mouth.
Speaking of good ideas, does anyone know of a cheap source for small korans that are cheap enough to afford hundreds
that could be deposited in prominent public urinals?
The sleeping dogs need woken up so they can be identified.
Bump for later
I can’t believe that Freepers are swallowing this whole stage show.
This is old news we all knew about Pakistan. Keep your friends close keep your enemies closer.
He was just sleepy.
Umm, You need to read up on the ISI. No country has the kind of influence on Islamic groups that the ISI has. The only thing that the US set up or rather stepped up was the transfer of funds and ISI threw a low-level flunkie once in while.
