Medical Deferment Allowed Trump to Avoid Vietnam War

After taking credit for President Obama releasing his long-form birth certificate to quell doubts about his citizenship, real estate developer Donald Trump may have to release his own records to address questions about his past.

Donald Trump, who claimed this week that a high draft number kept him from fighting for his country in Vietnam, actually received a series of student deferments while in college and a medical deferment after graduation, according to Selective Service records.

The Smoking Gun first reported the revelation after obtaining the paperwork from the National Archives and Records Administration. But it's still not known what medical problem Trump had or whether he still has it.

I have no respect for those who availed themselves of multiple student deferments and medical deferments to avoid military service during the Vietnam War. They couldn't or wouldn't step up to the plate then - why should I believe they have the Nation's interests at heart now?

I think this a non-issue at this point. We currently have a volunteer military and they are the best. The dodgers who went to Canada and were pardoned by Jimmy have more shame to disipate than those who were defered by legal means.

I agree with you. It was not uncommon to hear about someone who had a college or medical deferment. It was
not illegal like the guy serving in the White House.

George Bush senior was a fighter pilot in WWII. George Bush II was a fighter pilot in the guard. A unit which was not sent to Vietnam and probably had no chance of ever being sent to Vietnam.

Who cares? For gosh sake it was 40 years ago. We know who these people are and their conduct has been consistent over the years. Most of them led privileged lives of money and status.
