Veterans bridle at Fire Dept. hiring plan
Boston Globe ^ | April 30, 2011 | Andrew Ryan

For the first time, the Boston Fire Department has won state approval to hire 15 Spanish-speakers in its next class of 50 firefighters, allowing administrators to move applicants with language skills to the top of the civil service list.

But a group of military veterans, normally given preference for the jobs, has challenged the decision. Alleging in legal documents that the bilingual requirement is being used to “recruit people of color into the uniformed ranks,’’ the veterans have asked the state Civil Service Commission to investigate.

Why not have the whole force be Spanish speakers? Why not get rid of whites altogether and the problem is solved?

A sign I will never forget at the 2004 Dem Convention in Boston: “Women and minorities unite.” And yet they supported John Kerry. I laughed!

This is a scam. There aren’t that many Latinos within Boston city limits.

Plus in a fire Spanish only people can communicate with hands or w bilingual children and neighbors

This is why laws that establish English as the official language always get nowhere. Just another method for the left to create another protected class constituency.

Soon you will see a blanket requirement to be bilingual for any kind of government employment as cover for a new type of affirmative action for that constituency.

We now have a zero sum economy. The economic pie is static or shrinking. Whatever plum jobs Latinos get mean whites are going to lose. Whatever plum jobs whites get mean Latinos are left out in the cold.

To me the military service trumps Spanish language skills. Send the white firefighting recruits to 6 months worth of Spanish classes

FWIW, according to this article, the Latino population is 17.5% in the city. "Overall in Boston, 47 percent of residents are white, 22.3 percent are Black/African American, 17.5 percent are Hispanic/Latino, and 8.8 percent are Asian."

At 17% the Boston Latino population is on the small side. In NYC it must be double that. And the immediate suburbs of NYC have high Latino populations.

Boston is very “white” as far as major cities go

Hubby is a retired fire captain. For the last 15 years he worked in a small town 10 miles from us that is 99% ‘hispanic’ and a lot of them illegals. Only the children speak English.
His crew was all Caucasian, no Spanish speakers other than what they learned on the job. They had no trouble at all communicating because in an emergency the Spanish speakers speak enough English to get by when they have to. And if they didn’t the children interpreted.
So this is just an excuse to put ‘hispanics’ at the front of the line.

JP has been slowly gentrifying over the past 10 years. Many of the Dominicans and other Latinos have been moving to places like Brockton and Chelsea.

AND, in the upcoming re-districting dust up (we’re losing a congressional seat because the population has dropped (surprise)), that scion of conservatism,Scottie Brown (RINO-MA)is pushing to gerrymander Suffolk County so that it becomes part of a “minority” majority congressional district. BTW, Boston’s in Suffolk County.

Plus a decent firefighter, from all his experience, is going have a good sense what the English deficient person is upset about

And why is it again that anyone would want to live in Boston except maybe to see Dropkick Murphys in concert?
