Sitting in her basement den, 12-year-old Danielle Pagano looked expectantly at her parents as they walked into the room.
Their body language was awkward, she recalled.
"There's something we need to talk to you about," said her mom, in a serious tone.
The next few sentences made Pagano's head spin: Her dad was not her biological father. Instead, she was the product of donor insemination.
"They said they'd had fertility problems and used an anonymous donor," recalls Pagano, a 22-year-old international relations student from Seaford, L.I.
The soon-to-be teenager took the news badly.

"Parents who don't tell the truth, saying it's not in the interests of the kid to know about their sperm donor, are cowardly," she says. "They really mean it's not in their interests. It really gets me, because they don't have the right to decide.
"It's hypocritical when they say biology and genetics don't matter, as long as a child has loving parents. If it didn't matter to them, then why use donor insemination [not adoption]?"

Thr girl featured in the article comes across as a twit.
“she enjoys a close relationship with her siblings and a respectful friendship with Harrison but is still adrift from her parents.”
So she’s fine with the hippie drugdealing deadbeat who is only connected to her due to his flogging to dolphin for money gig but her parents, you know the ones that raised her in a loving home for several decades, THEY suck.
She sounds like a handful, but what can you expect when you’re brought into the world in such a strange way.
Seems genetics do play a role in who we are both physically and pychologically...Hopefully the mother’s genes will kick in when the child comes to the realization of who really is her Dad and who is only a biological glitch that accorded her her existence.
I would be more upset with a father who sold his sperm for money, than loving parents who spent time and money on me.
An obvious result of being lied to and deceived.
Well, yes, they kind of do suck, for allowing a total stranger to be half the dna make up of their child, for perpetuating the gene pool of this loser, for making their daughter vulnerable to possibly marrying her own brother one day......I think all of that sucks.
“for making their daughter vulnerable to possibly marrying her own brother one day....”
You mean half brother, but that is always a possibility. Lots of moms (10-30% depending on who’s study you believe) have cuckolded their husbands by sleeping around and getting pregnant with someone else’s kid. So there could be lots of unintentional marriages to siblings going on.
I never realized how much the medical profession provides cover for this type of thing until we needed to do genetic testing on our son. The doctor only wanted the mother and my son tested and said we didn’t need to test me since they could infer from the results what mine were. It was only later that I realized that he was “protecting” us from accidentally finding out that it might not have been my son.
Yes, she is definitely her father’s daughter. She is just as irrational and flighty as he is.
“An obvious result of being lied to and deceived.”
Huh? The parents let the girl know the truth once she was old enough in their estimation to be told; 12. If there was any deception or lying it was less due to evil intentions than the kid not understanding what they were telling her.

True. I wonder if the parents ever considered the old fashioned adoption route?

Any child would be extremely upset to find out that his or her father was not the "real" aka biological father. That some anonymous weirdo masturbated into a cup and that was cause of one's birth. There are many other reasons why artificial conception with sperm donors is morally reprehensible and selfish. There are plenty of children to adopt and if unwanted babies were not aborted there would be even more, sometimes now couples wanting to adopt have to wait years.
” wonder if the parents ever considered the old fashioned adoption route?”
The adoption process in the USA stinks terribly, now.
Sadly, the girls from “good families” (college-bound folks whose kids you’d be proud to call yours) abort their children.
The pool that is left typically have a lot of biological and substance-abuse (and VD) issues -— blindness, etc.
Moreover, the adoptions tend to be “open” -— so the druggie that gave birth knows you and shows up years later.
I’m no fan of this process, AT ALL, but I see why they didn’t want to adopt.
I agree its all about adults-only libertarian rights and stuff the kid. Me, Me, Me. Buy a puppy or adopt a kid.
She is obviously confused but thats the result of social experiments. She is a victim of a body and mind experiment.
She lived for 12 years under a lie and her whole world and what she knew was shattered in minutes. I have sympathy for her. But there is no right time to experiment with family life and the adults created this chaos.

Amen.
Yet another decades late revelation. BTW, “polyamory”
doesn’t work either, I can report, not from direct
experiences but from sources I consider reliable, which
reports sound much like the ones in this article.
What else doesn’t work? Fatherless motherhood, upscale
or underclass (by choice, not by widowhood).
