Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Hilliard school Tuesday, April 26, 2011 03:23 PM By Charlie Boss The Columbus Dispatch
The Westboro Baptist Church, known for its anti-gay protests at schools and high-profile events, is making a pit stop at Hilliard Darby High School next month.
Hilliard school officials sent an e-mail alert to parents today, alerting them of the group's protest scheduled from 7:10 to 7:40 a.m. on May 10.
"While the group does have the right to gather in protest as well as free speech, they will NOT be exercising that right on school grounds," Hilliard Darby Principal Ryan McClure wrote. "We have been in contact with the Hilliard Police Department, who will be available that morning for support if needed."
On its website, the Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket outside the school "where the parents and teachers teach Rebellion 101."
Spokeswoman Amanda Morris said Hilliard Darby doesn't offer a class or activity called Rebellion 101.
Are these guys getting more random in their choice of protest sites or is it my imagination?
So long as there is no breech of the peace, this type of speech will be protected.
A couple of idesa that have worked on those a-holes.
Get a bunch of friends to drive by real slow blasting their horns to drown out the chanting. Second get some bedsheets, mount them on poles, take a couple of friends along and form a barricade in front of their signs. Both tactics have frustrated them into leaving other places in the past.
The local Topix board is suggesting that the latest tactic by Westboro is to make these announcements at various locations, get everybody all fired up, and then not show up.
My son said some of the teachers were taking suggestions about how to handle it as a student body. They will not ignore it; one idea was to put all 1500 students and staff on the football field in a pattern spelling out a counter message and have it photographed from the air to post on line.
I kinda like what that county down south did to them a few weekends ago.
Blocking their cars in their spaces at their hotel....evryone getting amnesia, (including the cops), when one of ‘em got sucker-punched at the gas station....and hauling them downtown to answer a “few questions” about some “unsolved crimes” when the funeral was being held.
Good show!
Since this is not a funeral, there are no plans the school has to change.
The thing these groups hate more than any is to be ignored.
Quite correct--they made noise about picketing the Funeral of seven Mennonite children who died in a house fire in Perry County PA earlier this year and never showed.
As the Pennsylvania Dutch say, "got all stirred up for needless".
Nothing that isn't part of the ordinary curriculum, and this district is more conservative than many."
That works only if they spend the night here, and that’s doubtful. It’s easy to hide in a metro of 1.8 million people.
Try to stay calm.
There was a post a couple days ago about how a town in Texas handled these CS’ers who intended to “protest” at a soldier’s funeral. IIRC, the motel where they were staying was identified and “by chance” locals with trucks parked them behind any vehicles with Kansas plates. Any that made it out found themselves being pulled over by the local constabulary and questioned about why they were in town and “oh, do you mind if I take a look in your trunk? You do mind (reasonable suspicion)? Well, OK, but we’ll have to stay right here or go to the station while we wait for a search warrant. Your choice, Pilgrim.”
Take a leaf from the last town’s (in Mississippi?) book. They “accidently” parked their cars behind the wackos cars in the hotel parking lot and strangely, all the tow trucks were in use. The Westboro wackos also highly resembled “persons of interest” and the police department detained them briefly to ask about certain crimes. Sadly, when they were done with the questioning the funeral was over. :)
If they were in Michigan, we could stop them by saying we’d beat them up.
Too bad our SCOTUS doesn't have that much common sense. Free speech should never mean anywhere, anytime, before any audience gathered for whatever other purpose. People gathered, or assembled, for purposes of their own should also have a right to not be subjected to the speech of others who choose to impose upon an already gathered group of people.'
Anyone know what they’re griping about?
I think I could find some innovative way to interfere.
They will have Kansas license plates and probably be traveling I-70. With FR, Facebook, Twitter, etc., I would think it would be easy for “someone” to spot their cars and get the word out - it might take cooperation from the State and local police, but I think they would gladly help.
