(Reuters) - A woman has been mauled to death by a pack of four pit bulls in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, authorities said on Monday.
Margaret Salcedo, 48, was walking alone when the dogs, which had escaped from a fenced yard at a private home, attacked her at an intersection on Sunday afternoon, Truth or Consequences Police Chief Patrick Gallagher said.

First, we don't let pit bulls or any other dogs run loose. There are laws to deal with this sort of thing, and if local officials aren't enforcing them, that's not the fault of the breed. Second, do you have any scientific data you can cite that indicate pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds of dog?
it's basically that these people here have an issue with the sorts of folks who tend to own pits that attack
black thugs, latino thugs and white trash thugs
granted they will thrash bad crackers but they are too scared to get all froggy about the baggy pants black men who own many pits that they see or endure being around
so they focus on the dog.
yes pits can be dangerous but it's the culture they are in ...and their numbers...and btw....the standard on pits is very very loose...not nearly as defined as say Dobermans
when I grew up it was a fixation first on the GSD after WWII camps and civil unrest in urban America as the bad dog of choice, then that silly movie and Dobermans became the monster dog, then a movie yet again ...the Omen with Peck and Remick and Holden...and Rottweilers as devil dogs and they exploded and killed too...still do
now it's Pits because feral minorities and other trash like them for fighting and showing off
all of this leads to Specific Breed Legislation...something Chet was strongly in favor of
Myself...if I wanted a very tough dog would probably get a Caucasian Mountain Dog...a highland uberMastiff of sorts....but I don't think I could handle one...Google and you'll see why
But make mistake Pits are dog fighter and catch livestock or hogs dogs...they are not the best dogs for mankilling...they usually kill older women or children
the more dangerous dogs are larger...GSDs, Dobies, all Mastiffs, Corsos, Presas, Rotts, Filas, Dogos and my dog...the American Bulldog..Scott lines mostly..a rare blackie

Ban pitbulls and in 10 years everyone will own teacup Yorkies if you want a dog

there is a difference between a "you messed with me" bite or nip and an attack...and with big dogs it's easy to tell which is which.....i have never been bit by a dog and I've owned all the major defense breeds in my half century...but recently...my ABD snarled at my 10 year old when he took the dog's chew toy without proper persuasion...he just grabbed it....Big Boy snarled and lunged a bit...I stopped car...opened door...spoke very hard and smacked him seriously...as in man punch on that huge head..after a few he gave a little growl...I knew then I'd be testing my luck to take my point any further and his black eyes were rather dark...a sign of fear for you newbies....when we got home...he immediately got out of the car...ran over to me and rolled over on his back...and went full submissive to pack leader
I have raised big dogs for many years and they can all kill you if they go beserk.....the point as a responsible owner is don't ever let them figure that out and treat them right and they won't wish to anyhow...they will desire to protect you...and pits honestly are rather small in comparison....whispering might work for horses but with pack canines...I have my doubts....you have to be firm if you are pack leader...our big dog knows the order in our large family...he loves wifey and number 4 child best but he watches me for leadership folks who fear big territorial dogs should not buy them or buy smallish females though they can be pretty tough too *never cut a big male unless he is going to roam...and letting big boys roam is not smart unless you live way way out in which case leave the stones I hate seeing magnificent big guard dogs with no nuts
another note...sometimes dogs just don't like someone for some reason...not always easy to spot...usually it's fear they sense or that they think that person is up to no good...in that case...you need a cage for that time when those folks are around...better safe than sorry

A co-worker who has LOTS of dogs on her farm, told me use google. She said to google "pit bull attacks" "GSD attacks" "Rottwieler" attacks, and "Chow attacks" and then click on Images.
Looks like google images has me convinced of the problematic nature of pit bulls (and their idiotic owners) on unprovoked attacks on innocent, ordinary citizens. Pit bulls are NOT the same analogy to assault rifles in the "gun culture"...they are more like land mines IMHO.

The dog’s jaws remained clamped on the woman’s arm - the fire department had to use a tool to pry the dog’s jaws apart.
That story is pure BS. There is no mechanism in this breed's anatomy (or the anatomy of any other dog) that locks their jaws. A dead dog would release instantly. Either they lied to you or your telling tales.

It seems to me that the owners are often to blame for not using good common sense too.
Still, what you have here is a an animal that is closer to being wild than some people would like to admit. They seem to kill for sport too. They aren’t doing it because they are hungry, like animals in the wild do.

Law enforcement did its jpob. Many of these attacks occur in situations where the neighbors knew their neighbor was not acting responsibly and law enforcement/animal control did nothing about it when notified.

Most “pit bull” attacks aren’t even carried out by pit bulls. People/police just use that as a catch-all phrase for a large dog.

Great Danes and Boxers were originally bred to hunt boars. Shall we ban them from urban and suburban areas? What about the mastiffs that were originally bred for bear-baiting or to attack human soldiers?
Should we ban ownership of beagles in those areas because they are bred to hunt rabbits? Pits score better on temperament tests than beagles.

When the owners of pit bulls are incarcerated, we think they should be able to share their cells with their beloved pets, especially if they own 2 or 3. Occasionally none of the occupants of the cell, human or canine can be fed, as prison budgets are tight these days. The pit bulls will manage, which is the important thing.
Why would we ever lock a human up if the breed is the problem?
