Vicious Beating Outside National Zoo in DC

On my way home from work tonight, I witnessed a mob of approximately 50 teens beating another teen and kicking him in the head right in the middle of 6 lanes of rush hour traffic on Connecticut Avenue just outside the National Zoo. It was terrifying. They left the victim lying in the middle of the street. He eventually stood up and was clearly dazed as he tried to walk. Eventually someone called him to the sidewalk and he managed to stumble away. Police were called but the traffic was simply too heavy for them to be able to catch up to the attackers. I doubt that this attack will be reported in the news. It was Black Family Reunion Day at the National Zoo.

DC is an utter joke, and a bad one at that. If it weren’t for the history and the monuments, it would be Detroit.

A comment on the blog you referenced:
Gee, it's called "Easter Monday: An African American Family Tradition" until a violent crime takes place, and then it's suddenly the "annual day-after-Easter celebration."

Life in Our Nations Capitol, or, as I think about, our National Zoo. He is lucky he didnt get run down.
Despite the seeming upscale nature of how it presents itself, the National Zoo area (between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park) is not really a safe place. I've had a number of friends mugged in the area over the years (including one who was severely beaten by a couple thugs with baseball bats while walking home along Macomb St. after an evening at the old 4Ps) and always advise people to not venture from the immediate area of the two Metro stations ... and NEVER to attempt to walk between them. Esp at night.

Funny you say that about Amish.
I was there at the Zoo today and witnessed the inside action at the Small Mammal House.
There WAS a large group of Amish, or Mennonites, touring the Zoo today.
Needless to say, they were not involved.

The comments are telling.
When my children were small, we lived just down the road from the National Zoo and it was a lovely residential neighborhood. We probably went to the zoo once a week. Doesn’t sound too inviting these days.

Washington, D.C. is a zoo, not just the national zoo.
I lived there for 5 years and got out. I suggest you consider the same.

Yup. I moved in right before Marion Barry's "B*tch set me up" moment. It took the imposition of a draconian Financial Control Board and then a couple pretty good Mayors (Anthony Williams and Adrian Fenty) - by DC standards anyways - to get the city pointed in the right direction.
Gray is nothing more than a corruptocrat out of the Barry mode. Just without the extreme personal "tastes" (for things like crack and ho's). Which means that he'll keep getting elected until the city is run into the ground again. And beyond.

Tell me about it. I have a friend who lives in Mount Pleasant on one of those streets running down toward the zoo. Not. Safe. At night.

Unfortunately, with a mob of 50 youts, you probably would have been outgunned, stuck in a non-bulletproof car and unable to “blend in with the local populace”. Not a good situation.
