WASHINGTON (Reuters) Americans are more pessimistic about the U.S. economic outlook than they have been since the start of the Obama administration and most believe the United States is on the wrong track, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Thursday.
The number of Americans who think the economy is getting worse jumped 13 percentage points in just one month, to 39 percent, the poll suggested.
Just 23 percent said they thought the economy was improving, down 3 percentage points from the previous month.
Seventy percent of respondents said the country was heading in the wrong direction and most think neither President Barack Obama nor Congressional Republicans share their priorities for the country, the poll showed.
The dour mood is dragging down performance ratings for President Barack Obama and both parties in Congress with the 2012 election season already underway, the poll found.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy, while 75 percent said they disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job.
While Washington is consumed with debate over deficit-reduction proposals, Americans seemed uncertain about the impact of cutting the deficit on the U.S. economy.
Some 29 percent of those polled said cutting the deficit would create more jobs, while 29 percent said deficit-cutting would cost jobs and 27 percent said it would have no effect on the employment outlook.
The poll found considerable support for Obama's proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy -- 72 percent of respondents approved of that idea as a way to address the deficit.

This country is like a punch drunk out on his feet fighter. It just hasnt realized it should fall over yet.

Oh, deficit reduction will cut jobs by necessity. You have to get rid of federal and state workers in order to make this work. Those who contract with the government doing things the government has no business doing will need to lose their jobs (or massively restructure, which isn’t cheap).
But we’re approaching the point of no return here (if we’re not already there).
Cutting out illegal immigration and about 90% of the legal immigrants we take in would go a long way in reducing this.
People are irritated at the "rich" because they're not hiring, not creating jobs, not moving capital through the economy. They're just not holding up their end after many participated in the financial meltdown that got us here to begin with.
Millions of Americans are sick of looking for work. They do not want to be on welfare. They sure as hell do not want to be homeless. This has been a jobless recovery. The few jobs that came have been government gigs thanks to 'Porkulus.'
These are not the jobs we want. They're not the jobs we need.
People are angry because government wants to squeeze them more. They know what that increased debt means, what deficits mean. The middle class can't take it and those below are roadkill.
If you're out of work or underemployed, you can only cut back so far with inflation hitting food and gas prices rising.
Some might realize Obama lied to them, Keynesian theory was a bust, and the "stimulus" was an epic failure but most are just angry because they want their productive lives back and see no end in sight.
27% have become cynical and embittered believing gov't spending won't effect jobs either way. 29% bought the 'porkulus' line and 29% want to hack spending.
Selling off GM stock at a multi-billion dollar loss should infuriate everyone. Meaningless reductions in spending should infuriate everyone. The bailouts should infuriate everyone. What did we get for all this debt? Where are the jobs? Where's the recovery? Why is even the Republican plan showing deficits as far as the eye can see?
Out here Republicans, Independents and Democrats all agree raising the debt ceiling should NOT happen. Inside the Beltway, holding the ceiling is not even a consideration!
I'm deeply concerned things won't turn around soon. Politically that might be good news but who cares about politics if the nations in ruins? We've had enough pain out here, thank you, Mr. Obama, Mr. Reid, Mr. Boehner.
Obama's out here in CA, land of 12.3% unemployment and $5 gas. He's raising funds for reelection which is all politicians come here for anyway. It's a scandal he gets even one penny. Of course, the "rich" still have money to throw at him because they're not using it to create jobs.
Legal immigrants don't amount to a mole on a flea.
The ruling classes have decreed they need the illegal immigrant vote and want to make them citizens. Obama's using the McCain/W/Kennedy playbook. He talks of fines, back of the line, etc. for what amounts to amnesty.
If W couldn't sell "doing the work Americans won't do" during "full" employment, how the hell is Obama going to make us swallow it with high unemployment? Unfortunately, both parties are on the same page here. Luckily, neither wants to give the other credit.
We're fortunate Obama, Pelosi and Reid didn't ram it through. They certainly tried with the DREAM Act though and you know that pandering legislation is coming back. In the mean time, "Big Sis" Napolitano has assigned those "DREAM" cases the lowest priority, doing an end run around the American people who managed to prevent that heinous thing from passing.
We need to drive more of these race and class warfare playing, debt-loving, anti-Americans from office in 2012.
Obama is doing precisely what he planned to do. "
Remember Pol Pot and the movie "THE KILLING FIELDS"? O'bummer is destroying a country in a very subtle way as compared to PolPot but his goal is exactly the same!
The re-education camps are not very far off.

“And on top of this bad news, were still supposed to believe Obama has a chance at re-election; I dont think so.”
He has a very good chance at re-election. Over 50% of households pay no income tax. The person that promises to continue to redistribute the wealth (to them) is going to get their vote. Who wins is going to boil down to turnout and the dems have a much better gotv apparatus. Add in the fact that the gop has made snatching defeat from the jaws of victory an art form, and obama winning re-election is very possible if not likely.
The biggest threat to re-election that obama faces is a primary challenge.
Obama was a cry of desperation from a people watching their way of life disappear; those same desperate people very quickly realized their mistake, and won’t repeat it - they didn’t get any smarter, but they can all see that they are worse off than before, and if anything he guarantees that our previous standard of living will never return. His comments about gasoline consumption, and the temperature at which we may heat our homes, are a very obvious sign of a fatal disconnect that, IMHO, guarantees he’s a one-termer (if he finishes his first term).
I think you’re misreading or missing some things here: The fact that over 50% of households pay no income tax is a reflection on falling income/unemployment as much as anything else, and with the upcoming expiration of the “Making Work Pay” credit ($800 credit for many families) that stat will change. Also, more than 50% of households buy gasoline, and 100% of them buy groceries (even if they use someone else’s money to do it). With a small number of exceptions, nobody is better off than when Obama took office, and that is why he has no chance.
When the choice is between someone who promises to redistribute the wealth and someone who promises austerity, those who are the net recipients are going to pick the redistributor. They may not be so wild about the choice presented to them, but they’ll still fall in line. In much the same way that conservatives know that the Boehners and McCains of the gop are not very useful, but will still vote for them over the opposition.

The phrase is, “When you rob Peter to pay Paul, you will always have the support of Paul”. There are not nearly enough “Pauls” yet; Obama’s election was a fluke set up by a miserable economy that was timed to fall even further shortly before the election (Obama was trailing up until 2 months before the election), and many of the morons who voted for him out of desperation are even more desperate now. People who had productively employed up until a few years ago know that welfare & food stamps can’t compare to having a decent job, with the pride and discretionary choices that brings; in fact, there is probably a lot of resentment in people who once had a sense of pride being reduced to welfare recipients.
I’d imagine the tax scheme targeting the wealthy is to create more “Pauls”, but I don’t see it helping the Sultan. Too many unemployed “Pauls” have become what they despised before, and they will take it out on Obama.
Well, DUH!
We are truly experiencing the last gasps of the great Ponzi Scheme known as the Welfare state. Its just like drug or alcohol addiction—initially the alcoholic or drug addict feels good after a couple drinks or fixes but by the end of their addiction, they are drinking or shooting up just to feel normal and avoid the pain of reality. Our Welfare State economy operates on the same principle. Obama gave us a giant fix of Stimulus and it didn’t do anything. The drug doesn’t work anymore yet Americans are so addicted to spending that even alleged conservatives scream bloody murder when you hint you are going to reduce their governmetn payments. It is why we are screwed.
