White House blasts Republicans on US debt (but HOPES for a compromise)

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – The White House on Thursday accused its Republican foes of risking a global recession by saying they will not agree to raise the US debt ceiling unless paired with deep spending cuts.

Spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama hoped to reach a compromise reining in galloping US deficits and national debt "in the same timeframe" as a congressional vote lifting the limit on Washington's ability to borrow.

But "you cannot hold one hostage to the other," he told reporters aboard President Barack Obama's official Air Force One airplane.

If talks collapse, "you can't say 'well, then we're just going to let the United States government go into default, tank the economy, send the economy into recession, not just domestically but globally," said Carney.

"I think that would be the height of irresponsibility," he said.

Obama was here for a campaign-style swing that included a a a fundraising breakfast at a swank San Francisco hotel

Carney had been asked about comments from Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who said in a statement that his party would oppose "a blind vote" on raising the debt ceiling absent steep cutbacks in government outlays.

"Democrats want a free pass to keep spending money we don't have," said Cantor.

"Republicans will not agree to raise the debt limit without binding budget reforms and immediate spending cuts."

"accused its Republican foes of risking a global recession by saying they will not agree to raise the US debt ceiling"

Well; there it is....the Democrat talking points.

Ignoring the FACT that the spending on goofball handout programs to cronies and Unions that created the DEBT now is somehow supposed to be covered by borrowing MORE funds to cover it? What a concept! SPEND your way out of debt!

The Alinsky playbook. Create a crisis, then exploit it, all the while pinning the blame on your political opponents.

Unfortunately, at least 50% of the electorate are dumb enough to buy this as the media spin it Obama’s way.

Obama has spent more that any President in history, and now demands his credit limit be increased. Is he oblivious to the news that S&P just changed its outlook of the USA's credit rating from "Stable" to "Negative"?

Nothing about this will end well.

“”he creates the problem then attacks those who seriously try to solve it. What a putz.”

I finally figured out the scar on the scalp. He has a replaceable brain. He has one for running up the debt and another one for bringing it down. The one doesn’t know what the other one is responsible for....BUT there are probably more than two available. Sad - because none of them work!

One thing is sure Pay me now or pay me later.

If we don’t stop spending the global financial system will collapse. If we don’t raise the debt it will collapse.

Why wait? Let it all hang out, If it’s got to happen let it happen now.

This debt is unsustainable. STOP IT NOW>

Let's balance the budget by doubling the taxes of everyone at his fundraisers.

Obama has Boehner across the table, and thus not a worry that he will have to compromise anything to the GOP.

The “compromise” he’s hoping for is a total surrender on the Republican side. He’s likely to get it.

U.S. deficit deal could head off debt-limit fight

By Andy Sullivan and Tim Reid

WASHINGTON | Thu Apr 21, 2011 6:09pm EDT

(Reuters) - As Washington gears up for a fight over the debt ceiling, lawmakers are considering an approach that would allow them to say they are adopting fiscal discipline over the long term even as they vote for increased borrowing.

The approach, outlined in several proposals circulating on Capitol Hill, would set specific savings targets and require automatic spending cuts and possibly tax increases if the goals are not met.

Contentious fights over taxing wealthy Americans and overhauling health programs for the poor and elderly would be left to a later date.

This path would give lawmakers political cover as they vote to allow the government to borrow above its current $14.3 trillion limit, a move strongly opposed by the Tea Party movement and other fiscal conservatives who want to see government spending slashed.

Lawmakers and Washington pundits say it could head off a looming showdown over raising the debt limit that could stretch out for weeks after the limit is reached in mid-May.

“It ... enables you to build some trust between the two sides and get past the debt limit and get that monkey off the market’s back,” said Joe Minarik, a budget expert at the Committee for Economic Development think tank who helped craft a plan pitched to lawmakers privately this week.
